{"id":80765,"date":"2022-09-29T20:17:47","date_gmt":"2022-09-30T00:17:47","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/?p=80765"},"modified":"2022-09-29T20:25:44","modified_gmt":"2022-09-30T00:25:44","slug":"wells-bourgeois-statement-on-national-day-for-truth-and-reconciliation","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/2022\/09\/wells-bourgeois-statement-on-national-day-for-truth-and-reconciliation\/","title":{"rendered":"WELLS, BOURGEOIS: Statement on National Day for Truth and Reconciliation\u00a0"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">On Sept. 30, Brock commemorates the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation.\u00a0 <\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The day is meant to honour and recognize the survivors of this country\u2019s residential school system. It is also a day to remember those untold numbers of children who tragically did not survive their time at these schools. <\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The harms this system inflicted on Indigenous communities across the country did not come to an end when the last such institution closed in 1996. As Orange Shirt Day founder <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/2022\/09\/brock-welcomes-orange-shirt-day-creator-as-week-of-remembrance-begins\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">Phyllis Webstad\u2019s recent visit to campus made clear<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, the effects of the residential school system on Indigenous families are profound and continue to this day.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Remembering and honouring those who were forced to attend these facilities is an important part of reconciliation. And while Brock has made progress in its commitment to decolonization and Indigenization \u2014 including the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/2021\/04\/brock-university-seeking-indigenous-scholars-to-join-teaching-faculty-community\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">cluster hiring<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> of Indigenous scholars, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/2022\/06\/indigenous-research-grant-projects-to-explore-critical-issues\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">expanded research opportunities<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/2021\/12\/brock-honours-2021-22-horizon-scholarship-recipients\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">financial supports<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> \u2014 a great deal more work remains.\u00a0 <\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">That\u2019s why we encourage every single member of the Brock community to take time today to reflect on Canada\u2019s relationship with Indigenous Peoples. To consider what each of us can personally do to meaningfully advance reconciliation. <\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Attend an <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/2022\/09\/events-and-resources-national-day-for-truth-and-reconciliation\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">event<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> happening on campus or in the community. Wear orange.
