{"id":79400,"date":"2022-07-11T12:59:40","date_gmt":"2022-07-11T16:59:40","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/?p=79400"},"modified":"2022-07-11T16:49:16","modified_gmt":"2022-07-11T20:49:16","slug":"public-talk-to-provide-south-asian-perspective-on-trucking-industry","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/2022\/07\/public-talk-to-provide-south-asian-perspective-on-trucking-industry\/","title":{"rendered":"Public talk to provide South Asian perspective on trucking industry"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Freedom Convoy protests that began this year in response to vaccination requirements have catapulted the trucking industry into the headlines.<\/p>\n<p>However, the faces shown in media coverage don\u2019t reflect the reality of the profession, says Vibha Bhalla, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fulbright.ca\/programs\/american-scholars\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Fulbright Research Chair<\/a> with Brock University\u2019s Centre for Canadian Studies.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cClose to 20 per cent of Canadian truckers are South Asian,\u201d she says, \u201cbut what you see as the face of the industry are all white representatives.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>While the trucking industry has increasingly become a niche for new immigrants, the public hasn\u2019t heard discourse from South Asian truckers, including both drivers and owner-operators with established companies, about how the Freedom Convoy affects them, Bhalla says.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_79402\" style=\"width: 412px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-79402\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\" wp-image-79402\" src=\"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/07\/Vibha-Bhalla-RS-1050x700.jpg\" alt=\"A portrait of Vibha Bhalla.\" width=\"402\" height=\"268\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-79402\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Vibha Bhalla, Fulbright Research Chair with Brock University\u2019s Centre for Canadian Studies, will share her research on South Asian immigrants\u2019 experiences in the trucking industry during a free public talk Thursday, July 14.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>\u201cMy aim is to add a voice, a different perspective, to this truckers\u2019 movement,\u201d she says.<\/p>\n<p>Bhalla will share her research with the public in a free talk, \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/experiencebu.brocku.ca\/event\/207807\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">The Invisible Truckers: South Asians and the Canadian Trucking Industry<\/a><u>,<\/u>\u201d held at the St. Catharines Public Library on Thursday, July 14 from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m.<\/p>\n<p>Her work encompasses economics, labour needs and immigration policy. Using the magazine <a href=\"https:\/\/www.trucknews.com\/road-today-english\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><em>Road Today<\/em><\/a>, she is examining race, class and gender issues in the South Asian trucker community.<\/p>\n<p><em>Road Today<\/em>, published in English, Hindi and Punjabi, serves Canada\u2019s South Asian trucking community and points to a sizeable population. The magazine discusses federal, provincial and local issues, from national regulations and supply chain challenges to municipal highway access, parking and public bathrooms.<\/p>\n<p>Long term, Bhalla\u2019s research will also include oral interviews and ethnographic research with truckers in Canada and the United States.<\/p>\n<p>Her past work concentrated on Indian immigration in the Detroit area, but she chose to focus her Fulbright research on the Indian diaspora and cross-border migration between Canada and the U.S.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIndian migration to this part of the world began in the 1950s, once India became independent. As a colonized nation, it didn\u2019t have much infrastructure in education, so educational migration in scientific and professional fields began at this time,\u201d Bhalla says.<\/p>\n<p>Now, South Asian immigrants are one of the largest immigrant populations in both the U.S. and Canada. The ease of border crossing has provided immigrants, who often have social networks on both sides of border, with new opportunities to pursue.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTrucking is a growth industry, and growth industries always bring in immigrants,\u201d Bhalla says. \u201cI want to show how the trucking industry is changing.
