{"id":79391,"date":"2022-07-11T13:23:56","date_gmt":"2022-07-11T17:23:56","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/?p=79391"},"modified":"2022-07-11T16:49:24","modified_gmt":"2022-07-11T20:49:24","slug":"brock-named-official-university-partner-of-niagara-2022-canada-summer-games","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/2022\/07\/brock-named-official-university-partner-of-niagara-2022-canada-summer-games\/","title":{"rendered":"Brock named Official University Partner of Niagara 2022 Canada Summer Games"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Brock University has been named the Official University Partner of the Niagara 2022 Canada Summer Games, taking place Aug. 6 to 21 across the Niagara region.<\/p>\n<p>Brock will also be the Presenting Sponsor of three key Games sporting events: rugby sevens, wrestling and beach volleyball.<\/p>\n<p>The partnership builds on Brock\u2019s longstanding support for the 2022 Canada Games, which began with helping to support the original bid and includes contributing a parcel of land for Canada Games Park and the Walker Sports and Abilities Centre, $3.5 million in in-kind support through the use of University facilities (such as dining areas and residences being used as the Athletes Village) during the Games, a $500,000 financial contribution and a wide range of academic programming taking place before and during the event.<\/p>\n<p>Brock is hosting several sporting events on campus, including diving, swimming, cycling\u2019s criterium competition, and the first-ever women\u2019s rugby sevens competition in Canada Games history.<\/p>\n<p>The University will also serve as the Athletes Village for the Games and house more than 5,000 participants (athletes, coaches, managers, technical support) over the event\u2019s two weeks \u2014 providing the Games\u2019 participants with accommodations, their main dining hall, a polyclinic where medical issues will be addressed, athlete entertainment spaces and a transportation hub.<\/p>\n<p>Brock has also designed its own commemorative pin, to be given to each athlete, to help celebrate the occasion.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are extremely pleased to continue our support of the Games as Official University Partner,\u201d says Lynn Wells, Brock\u2019s Interim President and Vice-Chancellor. \u201cThe Canada Summer Games are a significant event for Niagara and will showcase our beautiful community to people across the country. We can\u2019t wait to host Canada\u2019s top young athletes on campus this summer and to see this long-awaited event come to a reality.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are very grateful to Brock University for its continued support and collaboration, which is something the University has provided since our earliest planning days,\u201d said Doug Hamilton, Board Chair of the Niagara 2022 Host Society. \u201cWith the 2022 Canada Games fast approaching, we can\u2019t wait to see our collective vision come to life in less than a month.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Games will be the largest sporting event ever held in Niagara, and the largest-ever Canada Games, with more than 5,000 athletes competing at <a href=\"https:\/\/niagara2022games.ca\/venues\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">venues across the region<\/a> and in <a href=\"https:\/\/cg2022.gems.pro\/Result\/Sport_List.aspx?SetLanguage=en-CA\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">18 different sports<\/a>, including the return of lacrosse after a 37-year absence from the Canada Games.<\/p>\n<p>Brock, the Niagara Region, the City of St. Catharines and the City of Thorold will jointly own and operate Canada Games Park following the conclusion of the Games.
