Azrieli Foundation<\/a>\u2019s Science Grants Program 2021 Competition.<\/p>\n\u201cThe overall goal of this research is to improve lives,\u201d says Raineki, noting that the estimated prevalence of FASD in North America is around five per cent.<\/p>\n
\u201cAbout 90 per cent of those with FASD will show some type of mental health problem at some point in their life,\u201d he says. \u201cThat is a huge portion of the population that has a higher vulnerability to mental health problems, which is not being addressed.\u201d<\/p>\n
Healthy gut microbiota \u2014 the collection of micro-organisms, including bacteria, that inhabit the gut \u2014 promote health in a wide variety of ways, such as regulating weight gain, fostering \u2018good\u2019 HDL cholesterol and triglycerides for heart health, impacting how the body responds to infections, and modulating complex behaviours, including anxiety, depression and social behaviour.<\/p>\n
The \u2018gut-immune-brain axis\u2019 is a communication system connecting the gut microbiota to the brain and immune system. Proper regulation of this system is \u201ccritical for typical brain development and function,\u201d says Raineki.<\/p>\n
Imbalances in the gut microbial community are linked to altered brain and immune system development and mental health problems. Raineki says these imbalances are seen in neurodevelopmental disorders such as autism spectrum disorder and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder but haven\u2019t been fully researched in children with FASD.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe goal of the current proposal is to fill this gap by characterizing the impact of prenatal alcohol exposure on the microbiota during childhood and to explore the links among microbiota composition, inflammation and mental health status,\u201d he says.<\/p>\n
Raineki and his collaborators \u2014 Catherine Lebel from the University of Calgary, Kaitlyn McLachlan from the University of Guelph and Natasha Reid at the University of Queensland \u2014 will be collecting blood and fecal samples from four groups of children. Laura Parfrey from the University of British Columbia will assist with the bioinformatic analyses.<\/p>\n
The groups include children with FASD who display signs of mental health challenges; those with FASD with low or no signs of mental health challenges; children who have not been exposed to alcohol before birth but who display signs of mental health challenges; and children who have not been exposed to alcohol before birth who don\u2019t display signs of mental health challenges.<\/p>\n
All children will also undergo a battery of mental health, neurodevelopmental and behavioural assessments.<\/p>\n
Raineki says he hopes the research will not only shed light on gut microbiota in children with FASD but will provide a model for research to better understand how immune function and gut microbiota may bring about, or prevent, mental health issues in other developmental disorders.<\/p>\n
Currently there\u2019s no cure for the damage caused by prenatal alcohol exposure and very few treatments and interventions to address the condition, says Raineki.<\/p>\n
\u201cExploring this new area of the gut-immune-brain-axis could lead to development of new intervention strategies for individuals with FASD,\u201d he says.<\/p>\n
The research could also help to identify biomarkers at the level of the gut microbiota that would indicate whether the child had prenatal alcohol exposure. This would be helpful to identify children as early as possible who need treatments, he says.<\/p>\n
