Brad Millington, Associate Professor of Sport Management at Brock University, and Brian Wilson, Professor of Kinesiology at University of British Columbia, had a piece recently published in The Conversation<\/a><\/em> about the attention and controversy surrounding the LIV Golf Invitational Series.<\/p>\n

They write:<\/p>\n

\u201cThe\u00a0LIV Golf Invitational Series\u00a0held its first event recently at Centurion Club in St. Albans, England.<\/em><\/p>\n

LIV is a challenger to established tours in men\u2019s golf \u2014 most notably the PGA Tour. Golfers have seemingly been lured to LIV by exorbitant paydays. LIV prize purses\u00a0are lucrative. So too is the money reportedly paid to top golfers to choose LIV competitions over other tour options (approximately\u00a0$125 million\u00a0for Dustin Johnson and\u00a0$200 million\u00a0for Phil Mickelson).<\/em><\/p>\n

As social scientists who study\u00a0golf,\u00a0media\u00a0and\u00a0politics, we are interested in LIV as a case study of the \u201cattention economy\u201d in sport.<\/em><\/p>\n

The pursuit of attention helps explain LIV\u2019s efforts at carving out space in a competitive golf landscape. But LIV has also been controversial \u2014 most of all due to the\u00a0financial backing LIV receives from Saudi Arabia\u2019s Public Investment Fund (PIF).<\/em><\/p>\n

What might be gained through an investment in the attention that LIV offers? What are the dynamics at work through such an investment? And what are the social and political implications?\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n
