{"id":79118,"date":"2022-06-22T11:34:13","date_gmt":"2022-06-22T15:34:13","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/?p=79118"},"modified":"2022-06-22T16:46:16","modified_gmt":"2022-06-22T20:46:16","slug":"video-helps-award-winning-prof-to-share-work-worldwide","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/2022\/06\/video-helps-award-winning-prof-to-share-work-worldwide\/","title":{"rendered":"Video helps award-winning prof to share work worldwide"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>It was a conversation around the family dinner table that gave Andrew McDonald the idea to share his research through video.<\/p>\n<p>The Professor with Brock\u2019s Department of History and Centre for Medieval and Renaissance Studies said his daughter was using many TED lessons \u2014 videos from a non-profit organization devoted to spreading ideas \u2014 in her high school classes.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe spent a lot of time over suppers during the pandemic talking about what she had been watching,\u201d says McDonald, the recipient of this year\u2019s Faculty of Humanities Award for Excellence in Research and Creative Activity. \u201cMy family said one night, \u2018Why don\u2019t you do one on the Sea Kings?\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<p>With COVID curtailing research travel and access to libraries, archives and documents, McDonald was looking for new outlets for his work. His TED-Ed pitch was accepted, and he spent the rest of 2020 working with TED to develop the short video <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ted.com\/talks\/andrew_mcdonald_the_rise_and_fall_of_the_kingdom_of_man?language=en\"><em>The Rise and Fall of the Kingdom of Man<\/em><\/a>. The video was published in 2021 and currently has more than 945,000 views.<\/p>\n<div style=\"max-width: 854px;\">\n<div style=\"position: relative; height: 0; padding-bottom: 56.25%;\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" style=\"position: absolute; left: 0; top: 0; width: 100%; height: 100%;\" src=\"https:\/\/embed.ted.com\/talks\/lang\/en\/andrew_mcdonald_the_rise_and_fall_of_the_kingdom_of_man\" width=\"854\" height=\"480\" frameborder=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>\u201cCompressing 20 years\u2019 worth of research and a 500-page monograph into a script of 800 words and four-and-a-half minutes was an amazing challenge,\u201d says McDonald. \u201cIt was a really fun and interesting thing for me to do and it forced me to think hard about my work. It\u2019s reached a far wider audience than anything I could write or publish.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>TED-Ed is the youth and education arm of TED that supports learning through producing original animated videos and supporting interactive lesson plans. TED-Ed animations and lessons are video collaborations between subject experts, educators and creative professionals.<\/p>\n<p>McDonald has authored, co-authored and edited 11 books on the medieval kingdoms of Man and the Isles, including his 2019 book <em>The Sea Kings: The Late Norse Kingdoms of Man and the Isles c. 1066-1275, <\/em>which was <a href=\"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/2019\/11\/viking-book-shortlisted-for-prestigious-scottish-award\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">nominated<\/a> for Scotland\u2019s prestigious Saltire Society Literary Award.<\/p>\n<p>In addition to a prolific publishing schedule, McDonald maintains a close working relationship with <a href=\"https:\/\/manxnationalheritage.im\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Manx National Heritage<\/a>, the government organization responsible for heritage in the Isle of Man. He has done many public lectures, seminars and events in the Isle of Man, including the <a href=\"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/2019\/07\/brock-prof-returns-to-land-of-vikings-for-book-launch\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">launch<\/a> of <em>The Sea Kings<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>Later this year, Manx National Heritage will be publishing <em>A Visitor\u2019s Guide to the Medieval Kingdoms of Man and the Isles<\/em>, a guidebook and introduction to Manx history written by McDonald.<\/p>\n<p>McDonald\u2019s publications include collaborations with retired Brock English Professor Angus Sommerville.
