{"id":79092,"date":"2022-06-21T15:35:26","date_gmt":"2022-06-21T19:35:26","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/?p=79092"},"modified":"2022-06-21T15:35:56","modified_gmt":"2022-06-21T19:35:56","slug":"indigenous-research-grant-projects-to-explore-critical-issues","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/2022\/06\/indigenous-research-grant-projects-to-explore-critical-issues\/","title":{"rendered":"Indigenous Research Grant projects to explore critical issues"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Affordable housing, impacts of climate change, decolonizing experiential education and boosting health-care delivery will be the focus of projects supported by this year\u2019s Brock University Indigenous Research Grants.<\/p>\n<p>The Office of the Vice-President, Research and the Office of the Acting Vice-Provost, Indigenous Engagement have announced the 2022 recipients of the grants, which support research or creative activities in any discipline and on any topic that relates to Indigenous Peoples.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat is exciting about these research projects is, not only do they engage with Indigenous Peoples in a meaningful way, but they\u2019re also directed at improving the lives of Indigenous people,\u201d says Acting Vice-Provost, Indigenous Engagement Robyn Bourgeois.<\/p>\n<p>The recipients are:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Maureen Connolly, Professor of Kinesiology, Faculty of Applied Health Sciences, \u201cDecolonizing experiential learning on the Brock University campus: A case study\u201d<\/li>\n<li>Liam Midzain-Gobin, Assistant Professor of Political Science, Faculty of Social Sciences, \u201cIndigenous Affordable Housing in Niagara\u201d<\/li>\n<li>Constance Schumacher, Assistant Professor of Nursing, Faculty of Applied Health Sciences, \u201cDefining a Good Life: Community Partnerships and interRAI Data\u201d<\/li>\n<li>Kevin Turner, Associate Professor of Geography and Tourism Studies, Faculty of Social Sciences, \u201cThe sky is the limit for community monitoring of climate change impacts in Old Crow, Yukon\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The areas of study are dealing with critical issues, says Bourgeois. Accessing affordable housing, documenting the impacts of climate change, decolonizing experiential education and boosting the delivery of health care are areas of concern expressed by various communities, she says.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat an honour to be able to support these research projects,\u201d says Bourgeois.<\/p>\n<p>By facilitating Indigenous-centred research, the Indigenous Research Grants program is a tangible way Brock University is advancing principles articulated in the Brock Institutional Strategic Plan, says Vice-President, Research Tim Kenyon.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThese projects will contribute knowledge, understanding and partnerships that advance scholarship and have meaningful impact, in keeping with values of reconciliation and decolonization,\u201d he says.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/2021\/01\/brock-launches-its-first-indigenous-research-grant\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Launched last year<\/a>, the Indigenous Research Grants program aims to achieve several goals:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Supporting Indigenous researchers and Indigenous-focused research at Brock University.<\/li>\n<li>Enabling researchers to hire students at any level to participate in their project (with preference toward students who self-identify as First Nations, Inuit, M\u00e9tis, and\/or another Indigenous group.<\/li>\n<li>Supporting and advancing interest and expertise in Indigenous research areas.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The grant of up to $7,500 aims to help researchers develop their research programs and creative activities so they can apply to external granting agencies such as the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada, the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada, and the Canadian Institutes of Health Research for funding, among others.<\/p>\n<p>Research and creative activities led by, or in partnership with, First Nations, Inuit and M\u00e9tis Peoples are given priority, although research proposals involving Indigenous Peoples located around the world are also welcome.<\/p>\n<p>Four faculty also received Indigenous Research Grants last year, with the projects in various stages of research:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Stanley Henry, Assistant Professor of Educational Studies, Faculty of Education, \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/2021\/06\/brock-researchers-to-work-with-indigenous-communities-to-name-spirit-bear\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Decolonization and Brock University: A Qualitative Analysis of First Nations Caring Society \u2018Spirit Bear\u2019 Program<\/a>\u201d<\/li>\n<li>Sheila O\u2019Keefe-McCarthy, Associate Professor of Nursing, Faculty of Applied Health Sciences, \u201cEarly Warning Signs of Heart Disease: An Indigenous Research Creation\u201d<\/li>\n<li>Liette Vasseur, Professor of Biology, Faculty of Mathematics and Science, \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/2021\/09\/brock-biologist-teams-up-with-plenty-canada-to-study-indigenous-plants-on-laura-secord-trail\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Indigenous Flora Along the Laura Secord Legacy Trail<\/a>\u201d<\/li>\n<li>Teena Willoughby, Professor of Psychology, Faculty of Social Sciences, \u201cAuthentic and Equitable Youth Engagement\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Applications are accepted on a continuous basis.
