{"id":79067,"date":"2022-06-20T13:52:51","date_gmt":"2022-06-20T17:52:51","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/?p=79067"},"modified":"2022-06-20T16:38:30","modified_gmt":"2022-06-20T20:38:30","slug":"on-campus-food-drive-aims-to-help-families-in-need","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/2022\/06\/on-campus-food-drive-aims-to-help-families-in-need\/","title":{"rendered":"On-campus food drive aims to help families in need"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Brock support staff are asking the University community to add a few extra items to their grocery list this week to benefit people in need.<\/p>\n<p>The Ontario Secondary School Teachers\u2019 Federation (OSSTF), which represents support staff from across the University, has teamed up with Community Care of St. Catharines and Thorold for two charitable campaigns: \u2018Help Us Fill a Truck\u2019 and \u2018Help Us Feed 100 Families.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>With the goal of filling a transport truck with food donations, the OSSTF is hosting an on-campus food drive from Monday, June 20 to Friday June 24.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_79069\" style=\"width: 388px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-79069\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\" wp-image-79069\" src=\"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/Hind-Belgued-Liz-Keenan-Madiha-Mariam-Ahmed-785x1050.jpg\" alt=\"Three women stand behind two large food donation bins.\" width=\"378\" height=\"505\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-79069\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Liz Keenan, English Department Administrative Assistant and Ontario Secondary School Teachers\u2019 Federation Secretary, is flanked by student volunteers Hind Belgued (left) and Madiha Mariam Ahmed in the Campus Store, where food drive donation bins have been set up.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Non-perishable food items can be dropped off in bins in the James A. Gibson Library, Brock Campus Store, Brock Central @ the Registrar\u2019s Office, Shipping and Receiving, and the welcome desks in the Walker Sports Complex and Roy and Lois Cairns Health and Bioscience Research Complex.<\/p>\n<p>Donations collected throughout the week will be delivered to the Pen Centre Zehrs on Saturday, June 25, where the OSSTF will be hosting an on-site food drive and filling the truck from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.<\/p>\n<p>Community Care\u2019s most-needed items include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>canned goods such as pasta, vegetables, fruit, soup, pasta sauce, brown beans, tuna, ham, chicken and salmon.<\/li>\n<li>pudding and apple sauce cups<\/li>\n<li>juice boxes<\/li>\n<li>granola bars<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Meanwhile, the OSSTF is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.canadahelps.org\/en\/charities\/community-care-st-catharines-and-thorold\/p2p\/feed100\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">collecting monetary donations online<\/a> for the cause through the \u2018Help Us Feed 100 Families\u2019 campaign. The initiative aims to raise $16,050 \u2014 the average daily cost of the roughly 5,000 pounds of food Community Care provides to Niagara families each day.
