{"id":78864,"date":"2022-06-15T10:09:28","date_gmt":"2022-06-15T14:09:28","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/?p=78864"},"modified":"2022-06-15T18:09:28","modified_gmt":"2022-06-15T22:09:28","slug":"applied-health-sciences-profs-lauded-for-research-excellence","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/2022\/06\/applied-health-sciences-profs-lauded-for-research-excellence\/","title":{"rendered":"Applied Health Sciences profs lauded for research excellence"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Two researchers \u2014 one studying youth mental health and another focusing on the development and organization of sport \u2014 are being recognized by the Faculty of Applied Health Sciences (FAHS) for their exceptional work.<\/p>\n<p>Assistant Professor of Health Sciences Karen Patte and Associate Professor of Sport Management Julie Stevens were each honoured with the 2022 Applied Health Sciences Research Excellence Award as part of Brock\u2019s Spring Convocation Wednesday, June 15.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDrs. Patte and Stevens are both exceptional researchers who represent the wide range of research excellence and student mentorship in Applied Health Sciences,\u201d says FAHS Dean Peter Tiidus. \u201cTheir contributions to the growth of the Faculty\u2019s research and its impact on individuals, communities and enterprises is both far reaching and noteworthy.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Patte focuses on predictors of youth mental health, with the goal of informing more effective and equitable policies and programs.<\/p>\n<p>Among her many activities, she co-leads the <a href=\"https:\/\/uwaterloo.ca\/compass-system\/compass-system-projects\/compass-cihr\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">COMPASS study<\/a>, a national research project that surveys more than 65,000 secondary school students every year in Ontario, Alberta, Quebec and British Columbia. The Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR) is funding the project until 2027.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_78843\" style=\"width: 432px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-78843\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\" wp-image-78843\" src=\"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/WednesdayPMCeremony_3-1050x700.jpg\" alt=\"A woman stands behind a podium speaking with yellow and white flowers in the foreground.\" width=\"422\" height=\"281\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-78843\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Associate Professor of Sport Management Julie Stevens delivered the Convocation address at the morning ceremony of Brock&#8217;s Spring Convocation on Wednesday, June 15.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>The project studies how individual factors \u2014 such as substance use, sleep, physical activity, screen use, diet and bullying \u2014 and policies and programs at the school and government levels affect youth mental health.<\/p>\n<p>Patte\u2019s recent research studies how the COVID-19 pandemic has impacted youth mental health and their engagement in health behaviours, and whether it has increased health inequities, with funding from <a href=\"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/2021\/12\/cihr-funding-helps-brock-research-impact-of-covid-19-on-youth\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">CIHR<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/2020\/12\/brock-led-team-awarded-294000-by-sickkids-cihr-to-study-impact-of-covid-on-youth-mental-health\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">SickKids<\/a>. She is passionate about <a href=\"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/2022\/02\/public-webinar-series-to-explore-youth-engagement-in-research\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">working with youth<\/a> to design, implement and disseminate research.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBy engaging youth throughout the research process and employing mixed and multiple methods, I believe we\u2019re able to have a greater impact,\u201d says Patte.\u00a0\u201cI look forward to continuing this work to improve our understanding of how to best ensure all youth can flourish.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She credits \u201cthe unique transdisciplinary and collaborative environment\u201d at Brock, learning from, and with, colleagues and mentors across disciplines, for successes in her research.<\/p>\n<p>Stevens, who delivered Brock\u2019s morning Convocation address Wednesday, is known for her research on women\u2019s hockey, launched by the 1997 book she co-authored as a PhD student, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theicegarden.com\/2020\/10\/19\/21458185\/book-review-too-many-men-on-the-ice-womens-hockey-in-north-america-avery-stevens\"><em>Too Many Men on the Ice: Women&#8217;s Hockey in North America<\/em><\/a>. She joined Brock shortly after that to develop expertise in women\u2019s and girls\u2019 hockey, including history, governance, player development, management and international growth, and expanded into broader hockey scholarship from there. She also studies <a href=\"https:\/\/sportoralhistory.ca\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">sport oral history<\/a> and the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=-NAQeZ9KpQw\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">impact of sport upon a regional economy<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Stevens integrates her research into academic and applied activities with a wide range of sport bodies and programs. Some of these include the Regional Municipality of Niagara, Pickleball Ontario, the Canadian Centre for Ethics in Sport, the Hungarian Ice Hockey Federation and the Coaching and Sport Management Program at Linnaeus University in Sweden.<\/p>\n<p>In 2018, Brock University appointed Stevens as Special Advisor to the President, Canada Games.
