{"id":78588,"date":"2022-06-09T13:30:39","date_gmt":"2022-06-09T17:30:39","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/?p=78588"},"modified":"2022-06-09T16:19:19","modified_gmt":"2022-06-09T20:19:19","slug":"brock-appoints-interim-director-of-human-rights-and-equity","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/2022\/06\/brock-appoints-interim-director-of-human-rights-and-equity\/","title":{"rendered":"Brock appoints Interim Director of Human Rights and Equity"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Brock has appointed Chelsea Takalo to the role of Interim Director of Human Rights and Equity (HRE).<\/p>\n<p>Takalo has deep experience developing and delivering diversity, anti-racism, human rights, anti-oppression and equity-based training, and currently serves as Student Equity Program Advisor at the Toronto District School Board, one of the largest school boards in North America.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_78589\" style=\"width: 312px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-78589\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\" wp-image-78589\" src=\"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/Chelsea-Takalo-1050x824.jpg\" alt=\"A woman with red hair wearing a jean jacket stands in front of a tree.\" width=\"302\" height=\"237\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-78589\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Chelsea Takalo will begin her role as Interim Director of Human Rights and Equity (HRE) at Brock University on Monday, June 13.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>A social worker by training, Takalo holds a master\u2019s in social work and teaches related courses as an instructor at Sheridan College.<\/p>\n<p>Takalo\u2019s term will begin on Monday, June 13.<\/p>\n<p>HRE was established as a resource to provide members of the Brock community with information, education, assistance and advice on issues related to human rights, harassment, discrimination and bullying.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBrock has been working hard to make its campus community more equitable and inclusive,\u201d says Takalo. \u201cAnd while there\u2019s still lots of work to do in this area, I\u2019m excited to be joining such a progressive team with such a strong commitment to human rights, equality and diversity.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In April, Brock launched a review of HRE, considering its mandate, operational effectiveness, organizational structure and resourcing.
