{"id":78528,"date":"2022-06-06T12:27:33","date_gmt":"2022-06-06T16:27:33","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/?p=78528"},"modified":"2022-06-06T16:54:36","modified_gmt":"2022-06-06T20:54:36","slug":"baby-badger-goes-coast-to-coast-with-family","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/2022\/06\/baby-badger-goes-coast-to-coast-with-family\/","title":{"rendered":"Baby Badger goes coast to coast with family"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>At only six months old, Audrey Ramona Humes had already dipped her toes in both the Atlantic and Pacific oceans \u2014 and stopped at many of the Canadian landmarks found in between.<\/p>\n<p>When her parents \u2014 Brock graduate Eric Humes (BSc \u201908, BSc \u201908, MSc \u201913) and his fianc\u00e9e April Wilson \u2014 learned they were expecting, they were in the middle of planning an epic cross-country road trip.<\/p>\n<p>Rather than cancel their plans, the pair spent the pregnancy preparing to take Audrey on the adventure of a lifetime.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe just thought, \u2018Hey, let\u2019s adapt,\u2019\u201d Humes says. And that\u2019s just what they did.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_78531\" style=\"width: 319px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-78531\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\" wp-image-78531\" src=\"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/Surgite-Audrey-Ramona-Humes-870x1050.jpg\" alt=\"A baby girl holds a Brock University brimmed hat that says Badgers on it.\" width=\"309\" height=\"373\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-78531\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Audrey Ramona Humes, daughter of Brock alumnus Eric Humes and his fianc\u00e9e April Wilson, had travelled across Canada by the time she was six months old.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>They revamped the customized Sprinter Van they had been working on \u2014 making room for the baby and her gear \u2014 and mapped out stops along the way to introduce their newborn to loved ones spread across Canada.<\/p>\n<p>Two months after Audrey\u2019s arrival in April 2021, the family hit the road. Over the next four months, they journeyed from coast to coast, parking their temporary home on wheels in friends\u2019 driveways and Walmart parking lots to sleep, and camping in provincial parks along the way.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI had never really driven any further than St. Catharines to Brockville, where I\u2019m originally from, let alone done a cross-Canada tour,\u201d says Humes, whose family now resides in the Garden City. \u201cIt was an incredible first experience and we\u2019d love to do it again.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Among the many highlights of the trip was the trek through northern Ontario, which Humes describes as the \u201cnicest part of Canada I\u2019ve ever seen.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen you see Lake Superior, it absolutely blows your mind,\u201d he says.<\/p>\n<p>Humes and Wilson both love spending time outdoors and hope to inspire a similar passion in Audrey as she grows up.<\/p>\n<p>Travelling with a baby on board didn\u2019t come without its challenges, but Humes says he cherished the time spent with his family during those pivotal days.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEveryone thought we were crazy to be living in a van with a newborn. They thought we wouldn\u2019t make it,\u201d he says. \u201cBut we did it and we came back stronger than ever.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Humes, who focused on Chemistry and Biotechnology during his time at Brock, was fortunate his job in software sales allowed him to work remotely while on the road.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBeing able to watch Audrey\u2019s expressions and hear her laugh throughout the day and to be able to finish a meeting and then play with her, it made every day great,\u201d he says. \u201cEven on the rainy days, you still felt like you were winning the lottery because you\u2019re getting to spend this time with your daughter.
