{"id":78294,"date":"2022-05-20T14:09:26","date_gmt":"2022-05-20T18:09:26","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/?p=78294"},"modified":"2022-05-20T15:58:35","modified_gmt":"2022-05-20T19:58:35","slug":"fms-hero-among-those-honoured-at-math-and-science-celebration","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/2022\/05\/fms-hero-among-those-honoured-at-math-and-science-celebration\/","title":{"rendered":"\u2018FMS Hero\u2019 among those honoured at Math and Science celebration"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Faculty and staff who\u2019ve helped Brock\u2019s Faculty of Mathematics and Science (FMS) to thrive were honoured for their contributions on Wednesday, May 18.<\/p>\n<p>The eighth-annual Celebration of Excellence \u2014 the Faculty\u2019s first in-person event since the COVID-19 pandemic began \u2014 saw a variety of awards presented to mark outstanding efforts in teaching, research and student engagement, among others. Each award invited nominations from colleagues who wished to see remarkable work recognized.<\/p>\n<p>FMS Dean Ejaz Ahmed and members of senior administration offered their congratulations at the event and spoke to the Faculty\u2019s contributions to the wider Brock community.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Faculty draws on the skill and dedication of five pillars \u2014 our students, colleagues, staff, administration and our community,\u201d Ahmed said. \u201cWhen we greet each challenge together with support and respect, great things happen.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Two new honours were introduced this year: the Friends of Science Award, which recognizes a community member\u2019s contributions in support of scientific endeavours that impact the Faculty and wider Brock community, and the FMS HERO Certificate, which recognizes extraordinary dedication and effort toward a challenging and time-consuming cause for the betterment of the Faculty, its staff and students.<\/p>\n<p>In addition to receiving a Lifetime Achievement Award, FMS Associate Dean Shyamal Bose was honoured as the first FMS Hero Certificate recipient.<\/p>\n<p>Bose was recognized for going above and beyond his normal duties to assist students struggling with the challenges of the pandemic, working tirelessly \u2014 at times over holidays \u2014 to ensure FMS students were thoroughly supported.<\/p>\n<p>Raziel Zisman, Partner and Leader, Sustainable Governance Initiative at Whittle Consulting, was the inaugural recipient of the Friends of Science Award.<\/p>\n<p>This year\u2019s award winners include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>FMS Excellence in Teaching<\/strong> \u2014 Costa Metallinos, Professor, Department of Chemistry<\/li>\n<li><strong>Distinguished Research<\/strong> \u2014 Chantal Buteau, Professor, Department of Mathematics and Statistics<\/li>\n<li><strong>Dean\u2019s Distinguished Scholar<\/strong> \u2014 Georgii Nikonov, Professor, Department of Chemistry<\/li>\n<li><strong>Student Experience, Recruitment and Outreach \u2013 Staff<\/strong> \u2014 Justin Steepe, Strategic, Outreach and Events Specialist, Faculty of Mathematics and Science, Dean\u2019s Office<\/li>\n<li><strong>Distinguished Staff<\/strong> \u2014 Alison Smart, Science Stores Assistant, Science Store<\/li>\n<li><strong>Distinguished Staff<\/strong> \u2014 Elena Genkin,
