Two of the IPCC\u2019s working groups \u2014 those focused on climate change impacts and on mitigation \u2014 use the economic term to discuss policies that are key to reducing the impacts of climate change.\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>This is a profound inclusion. By pointing to degrowth, something\u00a0Timoth\u00e9e Parrique, a social scientist and economist, refers to \u201cas an opportunity to recentre our economies on what really matters,\u201d the reports\u2019 authors challenge the widely accepted story that endless economic growth \u2014 an increase in the quantity of goods and services \u2014 is essential to reducing poverty and improving the quality of life around the world.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Degrowth offers the world a new story, one that acknowledges the role economic growth has had in climate change and identifies alternatives.\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Stories are foundational to how we understand who we are and the world in which we live, and we should think of economics as a story.
