{"id":77517,"date":"2022-04-06T13:40:54","date_gmt":"2022-04-06T17:40:54","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/?p=77517"},"modified":"2022-04-06T13:40:54","modified_gmt":"2022-04-06T17:40:54","slug":"name-of-brocks-spirit-bear-to-be-unveiled-at-event-friday","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/2022\/04\/name-of-brocks-spirit-bear-to-be-unveiled-at-event-friday\/","title":{"rendered":"Name of Brock\u2019s Spirit Bear to be unveiled at event Friday"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/2021\/06\/brock-researchers-to-work-with-indigenous-communities-to-name-spirit-bear\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Brock University\u2019s Spirit Bear<\/a> now has a name \u2014 and it will be revealed at an online event Friday.<\/p>\n<p>As part of the Reconciliation Ambearrister program, a Brock research team began the process back in June of finding a fitting name for the bear, which will become part of the Brock community and promote work towards decolonization and reconciliation.<\/p>\n<p>An online naming event to welcome Brock\u2019s Ambearrister will take place <a href=\"https:\/\/us02web.zoom.us\/j\/4352622713?pwd=ekE3NWhocHpJS3BnZkV5NEphVkpvQT09\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Friday, April 8 from 2 to 3 p.m. on Zoom<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Funded by Brock\u2019s first-ever\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/2021\/01\/brock-launches-its-first-indigenous-research-grant\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Indigenous Research Grant<\/a>, the project to name Brock\u2019s Ambearrister was led by Stanley Henry, Assistant Professor in the Faculty of Education and community member from Six Nations of the Grand River Territory. He worked with co-investigators Lyn Trudeau, an Instructor for Brock\u2019s Indigenous Educational Studies programs, and Richard Mitchell, a Professor in Brock\u2019s Department of Child and Youth Studies.<\/p>\n<p>The research team followed Hodinohsyo:ni&#8217; (Haudenosaunee) tradition and ways of knowing during Brock\u2019s Spirit Bear naming process.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe process of data collection, data analysis and presenting the information to the Clan Mother we are working with follows suit to the Hodinohsyo:ni&#8217; custom and tradition, or a framework, for naming our children,\u201d said Henry.<\/p>\n<p>The name for Brock\u2019s Ambearrister has special meaning and stems from the team\u2019s consultations with members of the Brock community who were involved in implementing the Reconciliation Ambearrister to Brock. Traditional Hodinohsyo:ni&#8217; names express how people walk through and describe their purposes in life.<\/p>\n<p>The research team will be announcing the Ambearrister\u2019s name and sharing insight into the research project during Friday\u2019s event.
