{"id":77456,"date":"2022-04-04T15:57:56","date_gmt":"2022-04-04T19:57:56","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/?p=77456"},"modified":"2022-04-07T14:36:57","modified_gmt":"2022-04-07T18:36:57","slug":"brock-community-asked-to-help-fight-period-poverty","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/2022\/04\/brock-community-asked-to-help-fight-period-poverty\/","title":{"rendered":"Brock community asked to help fight period poverty"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Almost a quarter of Canadian women and girls, and a\u00a0third of those under 25 years of age, have struggled to afford a basic necessity for themselves or their dependants \u2014\u00a0menstrual hygiene products.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/brocku.sharepoint.com\/sites\/United-Way\/SitePages\/Campaign.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Brock University\u2019s United Way campaign committee<\/a> is teaming up with United Way Niagara to fight period poverty by collecting menstrual products for the <a href=\"https:\/\/periodpromiseniagara.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Period Promise<\/a> initiative. The community-wide product drive strives to collect tampons, pads, cups and any other unopened menstrual products that will then be distributed to Niagara agencies, food banks and service providers for those in need.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe know that about a third of Canadian women and girls have had to sacrifice something else in their budget to afford period products,\u201d said Michelle Leone, Program Manager for Brock Recreation and one of the Brock United Way campaign members organizing the Period Promise drive on campus. \u201cFor some, those choices can be between period products and groceries or other basic necessities.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Without proper period products, people who menstruate can face barriers to engaging in community life, missed opportunities and impacts on their well-being.<\/p>\n<p>Research shows almost two-thirds of Canadian women and girls regularly or occasionally <a href=\"https:\/\/plancanada.ca\/media-centre\/plan-intl-canada-releases-new-menstrual-hygiene-research\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">miss activities because of their period<\/a> and concerns about access to proper facilities or period products.<\/p>\n<p>Brock\u2019s United Way campaign committee\u00a0will be collecting period products from Monday, April 4 to Friday, May 6 in many locations across\u00a0the University.<\/p>\n<p>Brock community members are asked to bring in unopened\u00a0menstrual products to help ensure people in need have access to these essential items across Niagara. Donations can be dropped in Period Promise collection boxes at the following locations:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Brock Campus Store<\/li>\n<li>Brock Card Office<\/li>\n<li>General Brock<\/li>\n<li>Guernsey Market<\/li>\n<li>Hamilton Campus Security Desk<\/li>\n<li>Hungry Badger<\/li>\n<li>Marilyn I.
