An upcoming Brock information session will highlight a valuable program for students interested in pursuing graduate studies in Speech-Language Pathology (SLP) and Audiology.<\/p>\n
Taking place virtually Monday, April 11 from 7 to 8 p.m., the event is open to students from any discipline and will explore Brock\u2019s Certificate in Speech Language and Hearing Sciences (SLHS).<\/p>\n
\u201cOur SLHS Certificate is a specialized package of courses that goes beyond the basic prerequisites with offerings like our Clinical Analysis of Communication Disorders course, where students engage in case-based video analyses,\u201d says Associate Professor and Chair of the Department of Applied Linguistics Lynn Dempsey. \u201cWith this foundation, graduates with our certificate have an excellent record of success in graduate school admission.\u201d<\/p>\n
Current SLHS student Emily Potalivo completed her undergrad in Medical Sciences at Brock in 2021.<\/p>\n
\u201cI was attracted to the SLHS Certificate due to its short duration,\u201d she says of the one-year program. \u201cWithin that time frame, I was able to get all prerequisites required to apply to SLP both in Canada and the U.S.\u201d<\/p>\n
Ashwini Namasivayam-MacDonald, an Assistant Professor at McMaster University, completed the Certificate in 2011 before earning her master\u2019s and PhD at the University of Toronto.<\/p>\n
\u201cNot only did the SLHS Certificate program allow me to obtain the necessary prerequisites for graduate school, but it also provided an extremely strong foundation for me to build upon during my clinical master\u2019s in SLP,\u201d says Namasivayam-MacDonald. \u201cWithout the program, I would have had difficulty gaining acceptance into graduate school and the first year of my graduate studies would have been much more challenging.\u201d<\/p>\n
