{"id":77216,"date":"2022-03-23T09:55:28","date_gmt":"2022-03-23T13:55:28","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/?p=77216"},"modified":"2022-03-23T16:32:15","modified_gmt":"2022-03-23T20:32:15","slug":"collaborative-efforts-highlighted-in-co-op-experiential-learning-awards","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/2022\/03\/collaborative-efforts-highlighted-in-co-op-experiential-learning-awards\/","title":{"rendered":"Collaborative efforts highlighted in co-op, experiential learning awards"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A group of Brock students who came together with the goal of creating equitable change in health care is among those being honoured by the University\u2019s Co-op, Career and Experiential Education (CCEE) team.<\/p>\n<p>As part of <a href=\"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/2022\/02\/month-of-virtual-events-to-celebrate-experiential-learning-at-brock\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">National Co-op and Work-Integrated Learning (WIL) Month<\/a>, CCEE announced its annual award recipients on Wednesday, March 23.<\/p>\n<p>Included was the University\u2019s inaugural Experiential Education Group of the Year award, which recognized students Ryanne Logan, Kiara Kalenuik, Kahlan Woodhouse, Tory Shklanka and Kian Rego for a Health Sciences project that explored how Indigenous and non-Indigenous people can work together to create equitable change in the health-care system.<\/p>\n<p>Logan, a fourth-year Neuroscience student, felt the project allowed the team to create tangible change that would have been more challenging to accomplish as individuals.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_77218\" style=\"width: 427px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-77218\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\" wp-image-77218\" src=\"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/Justin-Dilgert-RS-1050x700.jpg\" alt=\"A man smiles in front of a dark background\" width=\"417\" height=\"278\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-77218\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Fourth-year Bachelor of Business Administration student Justin Dilgert received one of Brock\u2019s Co-op Student of the Year awards.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>\u201cIt was awesome to have the support system we created,\u201d she said. \u201cFor more than a year, we have been working together on interviews, reflections and a report to learn about how safe spaces can be created for everyone accessing health care.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The team\u2019s efforts were also recognized beyond the University, with the group receiving Experiential and Work-Integrated Learning Ontario\u2019s Experiential Learning Student of the Year Award at the provincial level.<\/p>\n<p>Logan said it was a collective commitment to listening and learning about the diverse experiences of the group\u2019s members that allowed the team, and the project, to thrive.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe had M\u00e9tis, First Nations and Inuit team members, along with two non-Indigenous students,\u201d she said. \u201cHaving all of these perspectives together allowed us to see issues in health care from angles we may not have considered before.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The importance of collaboration was also evident in the experiences of Co-op Student of the Year winner Justin Dilgert, a fourth-year Bachelor of Business Administration (BBA) student who received the honour along with fellow BBA student Ishan Kohli for work terms they each completed at Moyers &amp;
