{"id":77151,"date":"2022-03-21T14:18:12","date_gmt":"2022-03-21T18:18:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/?p=77151"},"modified":"2022-03-21T15:57:28","modified_gmt":"2022-03-21T19:57:28","slug":"quigley-crown-brock-womens-volleyball-wins-oua-title-at-home","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/2022\/03\/quigley-crown-brock-womens-volleyball-wins-oua-title-at-home\/","title":{"rendered":"Quigley crown: Brock women\u2019s volleyball wins OUA title at home"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>For the first time in program history, the Brock Badgers women&#8217;s volleyball team holds the title of provincial champions.<\/p>\n<p>The No. 2 Badgers defeated the No. 3 Toronto Varsity Blues 3-1\u00a0(25-15, 25-17, 17-25, 25-15) to capture the Quigley Cup at Bob Davis Gymnasium in St. Catharines on Saturday, March 19. It&#8217;s the first Ontario University Athletics (OUA) Women&#8217;s Volleyball Championship in Brock history.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;This road hasn&#8217;t been easy. They say whatever doesn&#8217;t kill you makes you stronger, and I think that&#8217;s what&#8217;s happened to us,&#8221; said OUA West Coach of the Year\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/gobadgers.ca\/coaches.aspx?rc=619\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Steve Delaney<\/a>. &#8220;Tough times motivated us to work hard to make it back to nationals. I&#8217;m just happy we did it.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The Badgers will return to Calgary, Alta., next week to compete in the 2022 U SPORTS Women&#8217;s Volleyball Championships from Friday, March 25 to Sunday. March 27.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_77152\" style=\"width: 520px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-77152\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\" wp-image-77152\" src=\"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/womens-volleyball-Banner-1050x700.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"510\" height=\"340\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-77152\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The 2021-22 Brock women&#8217;s volleyball team poses with their first OUA Championship banner in team history.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>In 2020, the Badgers reached the national championships for the first time in program history. However, they never had a chance to step on the court as the COVID-19 pandemic brought the world to a halt a day before they were slated to compete.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We remember the pain we felt when we got sent home from nationals in 2020,&#8221; said senior middle\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/gobadgers.ca\/roster.aspx?rp_id=9318\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Grace Pyatt<\/a>. &#8220;We worked our tails off to get to this point. Standing here with this trophy, it&#8217;s a surreal feeling. It hasn&#8217;t sunk in.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The Badgers opened the first set with a blistering hitting percentage (.462) led by four kills from first-year outside hitter\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/gobadgers.ca\/roster.aspx?rp_id=9325\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Emily Foest<\/a>. The second set featured acrobatic digs from second-year libero\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/gobadgers.ca\/roster.aspx?rp_id=9321\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Aleiah Torres<\/a>, who finished the match with 22 digs.<\/p>\n<p>Toronto prevailed to win the third set, but there was no doubt for Brock in the fourth.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We didn&#8217;t expect them to battle back,&#8221; said outside hitter\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/gobadgers.ca\/roster.aspx?rp_id=9324\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Sadie Dick<\/a>. &#8220;We knew they were a great team, but going into the fourth set we just told ourselves: \u2018Ladies, this is our game.\u2019&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Setter\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/gobadgers.ca\/roster.aspx?rp_id=9319\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Sara Rohr<\/a>\u00a0racked up 41 assists as\u00a0Pyatt led the attack with 11 kills. Foest and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/gobadgers.ca\/roster.aspx?rp_id=9323\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Madison Chimienti<\/a>\u00a0each tallied nine.<\/p>\n<p>The victory extends Brock&#8217;s streak to 16-0 wins to set a new team record.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I feel in shock.
