The experience, however, struck a chord with the young music lover, who was soon jumping on any and every opportunity to perform.<\/p>\n<p>Fifteen years later, the singer-songwriter and first-year Brock Psychology student\u2019s passion for performance has only continued to grow. Next week, Turner\u2019s talent will see her represent the University at the provincial Ontario\u2019s Got Talent competition.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI have been writing my own music since I was 12,\u201d Turner said. \u201cThe first time I performed an original song was at a Canada\u2019s 150th anniversary talent competition in Welland, where I made it into the top five.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>It was with another original song that Turner competed in and won the Brock\u2019s Got Talent event in November, hosted by the Brock University Students\u2019 Union\u2019s (BUSU).<\/p>\n<p>The event\u2019s judges praised Turner for her soulful voice and emotion-filled lyrics, which she says are inspired by artists like Adele and the Beatles.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSince it&#8217;s my first year as a university student, I really wanted to get as involved as much as I could,\u201d Turner said of her decision to enter the competition. \u201cWhen I saw the BUSU Instagram post about Brock\u2019s Got Talent, I just decided to go for it.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"YouTube video player\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/SEcXg7nTM0o\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>\u201cBeing in Brock\u2019s Got Talent was really nerve-racking for me,\u201d she said. \u201cAfter seeing all the talented people I was up against, my expectations of winning weren&#8217;t high. However, it was overall a great opportunity to get involved and showcase my music.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Brock\u2019s Got Talent is hosted by BUSU each fall, with the winners receiving prizes in addition to the opportunity to compete in Ontario\u2019s Got Talent. Students interested in entering the 2022 Brock\u2019s Got Talent should keep an eye out for details on the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/brockbusu\/?hl=en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">BUSU Instagram account<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>When asked about her hopes for Ontario\u2019s Got Talent next week, Turner said she\u2019s hoping for a win, but \u201ceither way, I just hope I am able to make Brock proud and make my music known to more people.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She plans to perform another original song at the provincial competition, which will see students from nine Ontario post-secondary institutes showcase their skills in a live event at Fanshawe College.<\/p>\n<p>The event will also be livestreamed on Fanshawe\u2019s Twitch account to allow students to tune in and support their school\u2019s respective contestants.<\/p>\n<p>Turner plans to release an album by the end of the year and will post updates on her music to her <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/averyturnermusic\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Instagram account<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Find out more about the Ontario\u2019s Got Talent event at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.brockbusu.ca\/events\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">brockbusu.ca\/events<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>When Avery Turner\u2019s mom entered her in a talent contest at the age of three, it was merely to boost her confidence.
