Integrating youth voices in research benefits both research and youth themselves, but we need to do so authentically.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Knowledge Mobilization Officer and team member Jayne Morrish says youth-focused researchers \u201ccan learn in one meeting with youth things they would have never thought of in a dozen lab meetings without youth at the table.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt pushes research and knowledge mobilization forward,\u201d she says.<\/p>\n<p>But engaging youth in the research process is easier said than done.<\/p>\n<p>To that end, their team organized, and is hosting, a weekly four-part webinar series open to the public.<\/p>\n<p>The sessions, which run throughout March, will explore youth engagement methods, strategies and real-world examples that can be applied to child and youth health studies:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Tuesday, March 1, 6:30 to 7:10 p.m., <a href=\"https:\/\/teams.microsoft.com\/registration\/B2M3RCm0rUKMJSjNSW9Hcg,T0-Kj-XyKEqiszabUIJOOQ,4oAcegXD2UiRPnfMrZdguA,D93dJvtYYUyiQTAkDJRNzw,VSZHvX5dHk21Lps2FVKUrA,gOeNfKDyhUyAk0OgED8eZA?mode=read&amp;tenantId=44376307-b429-42ad-8c25-28cd496f4772\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Youth Engagement in Research \u2013 Planning, Design and Execution<\/a><\/li>\n<li>Tuesday, March 8, 6:30 to 7:10 p.m., <a href=\"https:\/\/teams.microsoft.com\/registration\/B2M3RCm0rUKMJSjNSW9Hcg,T0-Kj-XyKEqiszabUIJOOQ,4oAcegXD2UiRPnfMrZdguA,9BMy_HJ3HUSA5sChFO3KFg,t8S-WBWDzECz9YJPYNLpbQ,KFnKSRyPWkO2JP_MYw9emg?mode=read&amp;tenantId=44376307-b429-42ad-8c25-28cd496f4772\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">The Importance of Youth Voices in Health: Strategies to Increase Youth Engagement and Partnership in Health Services and Programs<\/a><\/li>\n<li>Tuesday, March 22, 6:30 to 7:10 p.m., <a href=\"https:\/\/teams.microsoft.com\/registration\/B2M3RCm0rUKMJSjNSW9Hcg,T0-Kj-XyKEqiszabUIJOOQ,4oAcegXD2UiRPnfMrZdguA,CqDNV2dFeUWzBuWum0idDg,ywpsEIZ4NEupSby8Wmh-IA,UWWoNkeq1UqH4w4EWIzErg?mode=read&amp;tenantId=44376307-b429-42ad-8c25-28cd496f4772\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Youth Engagement in Health Research: Why We Need to do Better and How<\/a><\/li>\n<li>Tuesday, March 29, 6:30 to 7:10 p.m., <a href=\"https:\/\/teams.microsoft.com\/registration\/B2M3RCm0rUKMJSjNSW9Hcg,T0-Kj-XyKEqiszabUIJOOQ,4oAcegXD2UiRPnfMrZdguA,xFKdSb2YvkyQoE6f0EeWCA,BJOGVl05CU6GjLkzT1VhOw,kayZIJtZXkiPAz__SU19fA?mode=read&amp;tenantId=44376307-b429-42ad-8c25-28cd496f4772\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Youth Engagement in Research: A Practical Look at Growing Equity and Engagement<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The webinar series is being funded by a grant from the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada (SSHRC) under the leadership of Emily Belita, Assistant Professor of Nursing at McMaster University.<\/p>\n<p>Belita hopes the webinar series will provide a foundation to strengthen knowledge and skills on youth engagement among youth health researchers, youth-serving organizations, trainees, students and youth leaders.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur aim is to facilitate these diverse opportunities for knowledge exchange to support ongoing discussion and reflection, and encourage integration of effective youth engagement strategies into youth health studies so that research accurately captures the lived experiences of youth,\u201d she says.<\/p>\n<p>Patte says the webinar series brings together two large Canadian youth research teams: the <a href=\"https:\/\/uwaterloo.ca\/compass-system\/compass-system-projects\/compass-cihr\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">COMPASS study<\/a> and the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.canada.ca\/en\/public-health\/services\/health-promotion\/childhood-adolescence\/programs-initiatives\/school-health\/health-behaviour-school-aged-children.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Health Behaviour in School-aged Children (HBSC) study in Canada<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Members of the COMPASS and HBSC teams will be hosting small group discussions, not open to the public, on how best to use the methods and strategies put forth in the webinar series.<\/p>\n<p>The COMPASS study is a national longitudinal youth health study that started in 2012 and will run until 2028. The network of researchers collects health information from about 65,000 Grade 9 to 12 students attending more than 130 secondary schools in Alberta, B.C., Ontario and Quebec. Patte is the Co-Principal Investigator and <a href=\"https:\/\/uwaterloo.ca\/compass-system\/compass-system-projects\/compass-cihr-mental-health\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Mental Health lead of the COMPASS study<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The Canadian HBSC study is a nationally representative cross-sectional study that collects data on youth aged 11 to 15 years old every four years to gain insight on young people\u2019s well-being, health behaviours and social contexts.
