{"id":76305,"date":"2022-01-31T10:05:39","date_gmt":"2022-01-31T15:05:39","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/?p=76305"},"modified":"2024-09-01T09:54:45","modified_gmt":"2024-09-01T13:54:45","slug":"rich-wicked-problems-government-involvement-in-sport-is-fraught-with-issues","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/2022\/01\/rich-wicked-problems-government-involvement-in-sport-is-fraught-with-issues\/","title":{"rendered":"RICH: \u2018Wicked problems\u2019: Government involvement in sport is fraught with issues"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Kyle Rich, Assistant Professor of Recreation and Leisure Studies at Brock University, had a piece recently published in <em><a href=\"https:\/\/theconversation.com\/wicked-problems-government-involvement-in-sport-is-fraught-with-issues-175010?utm_medium=email&amp;utm_campaign=Latest%20from%20The%20Conversation%20Canada%20for%20January%2031%202022&amp;utm_content=Latest%20from%20The%20Conversation%20Canada%20for%20January%2031%202022+CID_a43acf0c5d0c7751bb35b0262b8a8a4f&amp;utm_source=campaign_monitor_ca&amp;utm_term=Wicked%20problems%20Government%20involvement%20in%20sport%20is%20fraught%20with%20issues\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">The Conversation<\/a><\/em> about the complex landscape of sport participation in Canada.<\/p>\n<p>He writes:<\/p>\n<p><em>&#8220;People will soon be tuning into the 2022 Beijing Winter Olympics \u2014 the second Olympics hosted during the pandemic and one that has come under much criticism.\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>It was recently announced that tickets\u00a0won\u2019t be sold to the public.\u00a0Scholars and activists have continuously called for a boycott\u00a0of the Games on the\u00a0grounds of humans rights abuses. And many people are left wondering why the event would even be hosted given the ongoing global health crisis.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>These developments have drawn\u00a0much attention to the politics and political structures\u00a0underlying the Olympic Games and sport more broadly.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>While it is often suggested that we should\u00a0keep the politics out of sport, the public is generally coming to accept how sport is inherently political.\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>In Canada, we have a national\u00a0sport policy, and the \u201cencouragement, development, and promotion of sport\u201d is identified as the responsibility of the government through the\u00a0Department of Canadian Heritage Act.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>My research program currently focuses on understanding sport participation in diverse community contexts.
