{"id":76180,"date":"2022-01-24T16:18:51","date_gmt":"2022-01-24T21:18:51","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/?p=76180"},"modified":"2022-02-03T15:53:17","modified_gmt":"2022-02-03T20:53:17","slug":"brock-joins-bell-lets-talk-conversation-with-week-of-mental-health-events-resources","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/2022\/01\/brock-joins-bell-lets-talk-conversation-with-week-of-mental-health-events-resources\/","title":{"rendered":"Brock joins Bell Let\u2019s Talk conversation with week of mental health events, resources"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Brock University is joining organizations across Canada in recognizing Bell Let\u2019s Talk Day on Wednesday, Jan. 26 with a week of workshops and initiatives focused on raising awareness about mental health and wellness.<\/p>\n<p>As a leader in campus mental health \u2014 ranking first among all comprehensive universities in Canada for mental health supports in the annual <a href=\"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/2021\/10\/brock-scores-high-marks-for-student-support-satisfaction-in-national-university-rankings\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><em>Maclean\u2019s<\/em> University Rankings<\/a> for the fourth-consecutive year \u2014 Brock is encouraging its students, staff and faculty to participate in the many planned activities dedicated to growing the community\u2019s collective knowledge about mental health and demonstrating how to support students, colleagues and others with their mental health struggles.<\/p>\n<p>Beginning Monday, Jan. 24, Brock\u2019s Student Wellness and Accessibility Centre (SWAC) is hosting a series of online workshops open to all Brock students:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/experiencebu.brocku.ca\/event\/199182\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">SWAC\u2019s Sleep Secrets<\/a> will discuss topics surrounding sleep hygiene, sleep cycles, napping and sleep disturbances and how a good night\u2019s sleep helps maintain positive mental health. The workshop takes place Monday, Jan. 24 from 6 to 7 p.m.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/experiencebu.brocku.ca\/event\/199183\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Koru Mindfulness<\/a> will feature evidence-based mindfulness curriculum designed for university-aged adults. The workshop takes place Tuesday, Jan. 25 from 6 to 7 p.m.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/experiencebu.brocku.ca\/event\/195255\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Building Strong Relationships<\/a> will teach students how to create more effective relationships. The workshop takes place Wednesday, Jan. 26 from 2 to 3:30 p.m.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/experiencebu.brocku.ca\/event\/199184\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Reach Out<\/a> will outline five important steps to consider when reaching out to someone you\u2019re concerned about. The workshop takes place Wednesday, Jan. 26 from 3 to 4 p.m.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/experiencebu.brocku.ca\/event\/174917\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">The Body Project<\/a> will confront unrealistic beauty ideals and help students develop a healthy body image. The workshop takes place Thursday, Jan. 27 from 1 to 3 p.m.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>SWAC has also partnered with Brock Sports and the Brock Badgers to create a series of wellness workshops designed specifically for student-athletes. Topics include recognizing signs of stress; yoga practice, mindfulness and meditation practice; student-athlete sleep; reaching out to a friend you\u2019re concerned about; and online peer support drop-in. Events are listed on <a href=\"https:\/\/experiencebu.brocku.ca\/organization\/swac\/events\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">ExperienceBU<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>On Bell Let\u2019s Talk Day on Wednesday, Jan. 26, SWAC is hosting an online <a href=\"https:\/\/experiencebu.brocku.ca\/event\/199093\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Peer-to-Peer HUB<\/a>, where students can connect with Peer Wellness staff and fellow Brock students in a safe space to talk about stress or anxiety surrounding student life, mental health support, sexual health, substance abuse or other wellness and accessibility services offered to students. Students can log on anytime between noon and 6 p.m.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_76182\" style=\"width: 475px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-76182\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\" wp-image-76182\" src=\"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/Bell-Lets-Talk-toques-RS-1050x700.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"465\" height=\"310\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-76182\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Brock Campus Store student staff members Hailey McCurk, a third-year Child and Youth Studies student, and Charlotte Giroux, a third-year Concurrent Education student, package an online order from the Campus Store. Online orders placed between Monday, Jan. 24 and Friday, Jan. 28 will receive a free Bell Let\u2019s Talk toque (while supplies last).<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Also on Wednesday, Jan. 26, the Brock University Students\u2019 Union (BUSU) is hosting a <a href=\"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/2022\/01\/busu-to-host-an-evening-with-andre-de-grasse\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">free mental health talk and virtual Q&amp;A session with Canadian sprinter and six-time Olympic medalist Andre De Grasse<\/a>. De Grasse will speak about mental health and how to overcome adversities at any stage in life. The event takes place at 7 p.m. and is open to all Brock students. Registration is required through the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.brockbusu.ca\/eventer\/an-evening-with-andre-de-grasse\/edate\/2022-01-26\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">BUSU website<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Brock\u2019s Alumni Relations team will be distributing 400 cookies called Badger Grams with messages of support and encouragement from graduates. Students living in residence can pick up the treats in Guernsey Market on Wednesday, Jan. 26. Residence students in isolation can expect a cookie sent to their room. The cookies will be provided by\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.boxedcookiesandco.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Boxed Cookies<\/a>, a Brock alumni-owned business and\u00a0supporter of\u00a0Brock&#8217;s Student Mental Health Fund. For every box of cookies ordered this week, Boxed Cookies\u00a0will donate $1 to the fund.<\/p>\n<p>Residence staff members will be giving out Bell Let\u2019s Talk toques, lanyards and stickers on Bell Let\u2019s Talk Day and will encourage student passersby to write positive affirmations on word bubbles that will be displayed near residence dining halls. Residence students are also invited to play Bell Let\u2019s Talk Day self-care bingo, with a goal of completing one line within a one-week period. Students are asked to upload a photo of their card to the Residence Teams Channel to receive an entry into a draw to win one of two $100 gift cards provided by Residence Life and Student Affairs.<\/p>\n<p>Free Bell Let\u2019s Talk toques will also be given to anyone who makes an online purchase from the Campus Store between Monday, Jan. 24 and Friday, Jan. 28 (while supplies last). The Campus Store is also providing SWAC postcards with each purchase and will be donating 10 per cent of net proceeds of all purchases made between Monday, Jan. 24 and Friday, Jan. 28 to the Brock Student Mental Health Fund.<\/p>\n<p>Anyone interested in making a personal donation to the Brock Student Mental Health Fund can <a href=\"http:\/\/brocku.ca\/donate\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">donate online via brocku.ca\/donate<\/a> (select \u2018Student Mental Health\u2019 under the gift designation dropdown).<\/p>\n<p>In an effort to help improve the mental health of Brock\u2019s employees, faculty and staff are encouraged to <a href=\"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/2022\/01\/brock-employees-encouraged-to-send-notes-of-support-as-part-of-bell-lets-talk-day\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">send a note of appreciation, acknowledgement or encouragement to colleagues through the Be Mindful online platform<\/a> anytime this week. The online campaign is a collaboration between Brock\u2019s Health Management and Wellness team and the Alumni Relations and Annual Giving team to spread positivity, promote mental health and well-being, and <a href=\"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/2021\/12\/brock-employees-encouraged-to-participate-in-year-long-kindness-initiative\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">make kindness the norm at Brock<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Employees interested in learning more about working with students and youth experiencing mental health problems are invited to register for an <a href=\"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/hr\/training\/focus\/courses.php?cid=2494\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">upcoming two-day workshop on Mental Health First Aid \u2013 Youth<\/a>. Additional employee wellness events are listed on <a href=\"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/hr\/training\/focus\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Focus on Learning<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Brock\u2019s Health Management and Wellness team offers tips to talk about mental illness, show support and help people who are facing mental health challenges seek help:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Be kind \u2014 Small acts of kindness make a big difference.<\/li>\n<li>Educate yourself \u2014\u00a0Learn about and talk more about the signs of mental illness.<\/li>\n<li>Language matters \u2014\u00a0Pay attention to the words you use about mental health and illness.<\/li>\n<li>Listen and ask \u2014 Sometimes, it\u2019s best to just listen.<\/li>\n<li>Talk about it \u2014 Start a dialogue and break the silence.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Several departments across the University will be using social media throughout the week to promote mental health and wellness information and resources. Brock Dining Services, for example, plans to post about gut health and its relation to mental health. Recreation Services will be promoting the #MoveForYourMood campaign and asking students, faculty and staff to share photos of how they move to be featured on the Recreation Services Instagram story.<\/p>\n<p>Recreation Services continues to host\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/recreation\/fitness-programs\/expressfit-onlinelive\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">online fitness programming<\/a>\u00a0as part of its monthly offerings, which include classes such as yoga, self-defence and Zumba. For students looking to connect with a fitness community,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/recreation\/fitness-programs\/expressfit-onlinelive\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Fitness with Friends<\/a>\u00a0is an opportunity for students to support one another in their health and wellness journey.<\/p>\n<p>As part of the Brock Library\u2019s ongoing commitment to supporting wellness at Brock, the department offers free Library Yoga sessions each term, including <a href=\"https:\/\/experiencebu.brocku.ca\/event\/195438\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">a live online yoga session on Bell Let\u2019s Talk Day<\/a>. Recordings of the 30-minute online Library Yoga sessions, as well as Library Yoga \u2018shorts\u2019 of two to five minutes in length, are available to the public on the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/user\/BrockLibrary\/featured\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Brock University Library\u2019s YouTube channel<\/a>. Many additional library resources, such as reading lists, board games, therapy lamps and more, are listed on the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/library\/wellness\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Wellness at the Library web page<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>On Bell Let\u2019s Talk Day on Wednesday, Jan. 26, Bell will donate five cents towards <a href=\"https:\/\/letstalk.bell.ca\/en\/results-impact\/#funds\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">mental health programs<\/a> for every tweet or TikTok video using the #BellLetsTalk hashtag as well as every text, phone call, social media video view and use of Bell\u2019s Facebook frame or Snapchat lens.<\/p>\n<p>Additional Bell Let\u2019s Talk Day events may be listed on <a href=\"https:\/\/experiencebu.brocku.ca\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">ExperienceBU<\/a>. To add additional Bell Let\u2019s Talk Day events to this article, please contact <em>The Brock News<\/em> at <a href=\"mailto:campusnews@brocku.ca\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">campusnews@brocku.ca<\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>Student mental health resources<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Students seeking mental health and personal counselling support can access professional licensed counsellors 24-7 through the \u2018My Student Support Program (<a href=\"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/health-wellness-accessibility\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/194\/PDF_Image_SPPApp-1c.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">My SPP<\/a>)\u2019 mobile app. Free and confidential real-time text chat and telephone support is available in five languages: English, French, Spanish, Mandarin and Cantonese (simplified Chinese via chat).<\/p>\n<p>In addition to live and immediate support, the app also offers an extensive library of mental health and well-being resources, including articles, podcasts, infographics and videos; unlimited free access to the virtual fitness app LIFT; and anonymous evidence-based self-assessments that can help students identify risks for mental health issues such as depression, general anxiety and addiction.<\/p>\n<p>The app can be downloaded from\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/apps.apple.com\/ca\/app\/my-ssp\/id1112006222\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">the Apple App Store<\/a>\u00a0or\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/play.google.com\/store\/apps\/details?id=com.onetapsolutions.morneau.myissp&amp;hl=en_CA&amp;gl=US\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Google Play<\/a>. When creating a profile, students should enter \u2018Brock University Student Counselling Program\u2019 as the school.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Employee mental health resources<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Brock University employees have free and confidential access to mental health and wellness supports through the University\u2019s Employee and Family Assistance Program (EFAP) provider LifeWorks. All Brock faculty and staff and their immediate family members can access EFAP support services 24-7 by calling 1-844-880-9137.<\/p>\n<p>The LifeWorks wellness website and mobile app are also available to all current Brock University employees. Staff and faculty can\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/brockuniversity.lifeworks.com\/signup\/invitation\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">sign up at brockuniversity.lifeworks.com<\/a>\u00a0using a unique invitation code included in an email received from LifeWorks to their Brock email in April 2021. Once registered and logged in, employees can invite up to five family members to join the LifeWorks platform. The LifeWorks mobile app can be downloaded from the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/apps.apple.com\/ca\/app\/workangel\/id662088737\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Apple App Store<\/a>\u00a0or\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/play.google.com\/store\/apps\/details?id=com.wam.android&amp;hl=en-CA\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Google Play.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>LifeWorks offers articles, podcasts and videos on a variety of topics; financial, mental, physical and social well-being self-assessments; automated fitness journeys and live chat access to coaches through the LIFT session app; and exclusive discounts and special offers called \u2018perks.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>The LifeWorks platform also features several free online self-guided well-being programs. The \u2018CareNow\u2019 programs are based on cognitive-behavioural therapy and include techniques and strategies employees can use to become and stay healthy.
