{"id":76177,"date":"2022-01-24T11:54:21","date_gmt":"2022-01-24T16:54:21","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/?p=76177"},"modified":"2022-01-24T16:23:17","modified_gmt":"2022-01-24T21:23:17","slug":"brock-womens-basketball-team-raising-funds-to-support-canadians-affected-by-cancer","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/2022\/01\/brock-womens-basketball-team-raising-funds-to-support-canadians-affected-by-cancer\/","title":{"rendered":"Brock women\u2019s basketball team raising funds to support Canadians affected by cancer"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Brock women\u2019s basketball team is participating in the 15th annual Shoot for the Cure to help raise money supporting the Canadian Cancer Society.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe all have had at least one person, whether a family member, friend, classmate, teacher or peer, be affected by cancer at some point in our life,\u201d said senior forward Mackenzie Robinson. \u201cAs the pandemic continues to persist, we can\u2019t forget about the other diseases that people are faced with, such as breast cancer and other types of cancer.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Brock is joining forces with 47 other U SPORTS women\u2019s basketball programs from across the country to hit the nationwide goal of raising $100,000.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/support.cancer.ca\/site\/TR\/?pg=team&amp;team_id=484554&amp;fr_id=28167\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Donations<\/a> can be made until Sunday, Jan. 30 through the <a href=\"https:\/\/support.cancer.ca\/site\/TR\/?pg=team&amp;team_id=484554&amp;fr_id=28167\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Canadian Cancer Society website<\/a>\u00a0to help the Brock women\u2019s basketball team reach their goal of $2,000.<\/p>\n<p>Robinson, a Master of Education student from Collingwood, has witnessed the impact fundraising initiatives like Shoot for the Cure can have on someone battling cancer.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019ve seen this first-hand with my grandmother, who is still battling breast cancer,\u201d she said. \u201cWithout these donations to support research, she wouldn\u2019t be receiving the current treatment that she is, and because of that treatment, she is still alive today.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Last year, Robinson and the Badgers helped contribute to U SPORTS\u2019 total collection of $137,000 during the COVID-19 pandemic.<\/p>\n<p>An annual fundraising event for the Canadian Cancer Society, Shoot for the Cure will run in a hybrid format this season between online member events and in-person initiatives.<\/p>\n<p>U SPORTS has set up a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.32auctions.com\/nationalSFTC\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">league-wide virtual auction<\/a>\u00a0where donors can bid on items such as a pair of Reebok shoes signed by former NBA player Allen Iverson.<\/p>\n<p>The Shoot for the Cure event has run since 2007 and has a 15-year target of $1.69 million.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cRaising money truly does have a massive impact, especially on those who continue to fight cancer,\u201d Robinson said. \u201cBy donating, these proceeds will go towards more research to find new methods for diagnosing, treating, managing and preventing cancer.
