{"id":75203,"date":"2021-11-15T14:34:35","date_gmt":"2021-11-15T19:34:35","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/?p=75203"},"modified":"2021-11-15T16:06:10","modified_gmt":"2021-11-15T21:06:10","slug":"kingsley-donation-a-reflection-of-community-support","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/2021\/11\/kingsley-donation-a-reflection-of-community-support\/","title":{"rendered":"Kingsley donation a reflection of community support"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Fred Kingsley was a longtime supporter of Brock University and the role post-secondary education played in the growth and success of the Niagara region that he loved.<\/p>\n<p>Just ahead of <a href=\"https:\/\/afpglobal.org\/NPDLove\">National Philanthropy Day<\/a> on Monday, Nov. 15, a generous gift was made to Brock in honour of Kingsley, reflecting the foundation of community supporters in which the University was built on.<\/p>\n<p>A native of London, England, Kingsley immigrated to Canada in 1948 and moved to St. Catharines in 1953, working as a reporter, columnist and editor at the <em>St. Catharines Standard<\/em> for nearly four decades.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_75205\" style=\"width: 490px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/11\/Kingsley2.jpg\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-75205\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\" wp-image-75205\" src=\"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/11\/Kingsley2.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"480\" height=\"607\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-75205\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">A generous gift was recently made to Brock in honour of Fred Kingsley, a longtime supporter of the University.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>In the early years of development for the University, Kingsley and colleagues at the<em> Standard<\/em> led the \u201cMile of Quarters\u201d initiative, collecting quarters until a row of them stretched from the front desk to the newsroom and back again. The quarters were then donated towards the initial funding of Brock in 1964.<\/p>\n<p>Kingsley\u2019s wife Judy, who was also a <em>Standard<\/em> editor at the time, said everyone was excited to contribute to the effort.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt was a big deal. We didn\u2019t have a university in St. Catharines and many of us, Fred especially, believed the region needed one,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>From the initial years, the couple followed the evolution of Brock closely and the growing impact it had on the region. Over the years, their son Peter attended Brock and Fred and Judy would often attend Political Science lectures in which they were \u201cabsolutely fascinated\u201d by the level of education available in their hometown.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEverything about Brock has served so much good in our lives,\u201d said Judy. \u201cFred would be pleased to know this gift was made in his memory to establish a good on-campus experience for students.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Sonia Dupte, Director, Development and Stewardship at Brock, said National Philanthropy Day is an important opportunity for the University to reflect on the support it has received from the community over the years.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis day is about thanking dedicated donors like Fred Kingsley, who not only invested in the founding of Brock, but continued to invest in the future of our students, our campus and our community,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI am continuously impressed by the community\u2019s strong desire to support and enhance the student experience here at Brock.
