{"id":75184,"date":"2021-11-12T11:32:23","date_gmt":"2021-11-12T16:32:23","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/?p=75184"},"modified":"2024-09-01T09:54:48","modified_gmt":"2024-09-01T13:54:48","slug":"chan-companies-must-advocate-for-lgbt-rights-everywhere-in-the-world-not-just-where-its-easy","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/2021\/11\/chan-companies-must-advocate-for-lgbt-rights-everywhere-in-the-world-not-just-where-its-easy\/","title":{"rendered":"CHAN: Companies must advocate for LGBT rights everywhere in the world, not just where it\u2019s easy"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Ken Chan, Brock University Vice-President, Administration and Global Executive PhD student at ESCP Business School, had a piece recently published in <em><a href=\"https:\/\/theconversation.com\/companies-must-advocate-for-lgbt-rights-everywhere-in-the-world-not-just-where-its-easy-167915\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">The Conversation<\/a><\/em> about actions corporations can take to advocate for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people in countries where they may face hostility or discrimination.<\/p>\n<p>He writes:<\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cIt has now become commonplace for major corporations to join in on LGBT events such as Pride Month, National Coming Out Day or the International Day Against Homophobia, Transphobia and Biphobia. Indeed, this is sometimes a\u00a0source of criticism within the community as companies are perceived to be cashing in on LGBT causes.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>In the United States, several hundred American corporations are part of a\u00a0Human Rights Campaign business coalition\u00a0which advocates in support of a bill in Congress that would provide legal protections to LGBT people.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>But it is easy to forget that these demonstrations of support for LGBT customers and employees is restricted to certain countries. Corporate solidarity is rarely a privilege afforded to people living in countries where governments are hostile to the LGBT community.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>This represents a large proportion of the world. According to the\u00a0International Lesbian and Gay Association, 69 countries currently criminalise consensual same-sex activities. In some countries, the penalty is death.
