{"id":75158,"date":"2021-11-11T15:10:50","date_gmt":"2021-11-11T20:10:50","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/?p=75158"},"modified":"2021-11-11T15:27:18","modified_gmt":"2021-11-11T20:27:18","slug":"brock-community-reflects-on-days-of-remembrance","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/2021\/11\/brock-community-reflects-on-days-of-remembrance\/","title":{"rendered":"Brock community reflects on days of remembrance"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Brock\u2019s normally bustling Rankin Family Pavilion (RFP) stood still for a moment in time Thursday, Nov. 11, with a small gathering in person and more than 1,600 people watching online stopping to reflect on the significance of Remembrance Day.<\/p>\n<p>It was the second of two important days of awareness held this week, preceded by National Aboriginal Veterans Day on Monday, Nov. 8.<\/p>\n<p>A small Remembrance Day ceremony was livestreamed from the RFP at 11 a.m., with Brock University Interim President Lynn Wells leading a moment of silence before being joined in the placing of wreaths in front of the Brock cenotaph by Brock University Students\u2019 Union President Rafay Rehan, Graduate Students\u2019 Association President Christopher Yendt, Board of Trustees Chair Mark Arthur and Royal Canadian Legion 17 representatives Dave Hale and Donna Hale.<strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>A recording of the event can be watched below and is also available at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.brocku.ca\/remember\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">brocku.ca\/remember<\/a><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_75159\" style=\"width: 330px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-75159\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\" wp-image-75159\" src=\"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/11\/Lynn-Wells-Remembrance-Day-2021-RS-1042x1050.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"320\" height=\"322\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-75159\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Brock University Interim President Lynn Wells offered welcoming remarks during the small gathering held in the Rankin Family Pavilion to mark Remembrance Day on Thursday, Nov. 11. The event was livestreamed for the Brock and wider community, with more than 1,600 people taking the time to watch and reflect.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Wells emphasized the importance of continuing the act of remembrance for both National Aboriginal Veterans Day and Remembrance Day, even when large, in-person gatherings are not possible due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTake a moment to reflect upon the sacrifices so many have made, and on the terrible toll war has taken \u2014 and continues to take \u2014 on humankind,\u201d she said. \u201cIf the COVID-19 pandemic has taught us anything, it\u2019s that we can accomplish things that were once thought impossible \u2014 but only by coming together for the common good. If we are to rid the world of the scourge of war, it will also be in this way \u2014 through the collective efforts of us all.
