{"id":75093,"date":"2021-11-09T09:48:33","date_gmt":"2021-11-09T14:48:33","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/?p=75093"},"modified":"2024-09-01T09:54:48","modified_gmt":"2024-09-01T13:54:48","slug":"mindzak-and-eaton-artificial-intelligence-is-getting-better-at-writing-and-universities-should-worry-about-plagiarism","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/2021\/11\/mindzak-and-eaton-artificial-intelligence-is-getting-better-at-writing-and-universities-should-worry-about-plagiarism\/","title":{"rendered":"MINDZAK and EATON: Artificial intelligence is getting better at writing, and universities should worry about\u00a0plagiarism"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Michael Mindzak, Assistant Professor of Educational Studies at Brock University, and Sarah Elaine Eaton, Educational Leader in Residence, Academic Integrity and Assistant Professor at the University of Calgary, had a piece recently published in <em><a href=\"https:\/\/theconversation.com\/artificial-intelligence-is-getting-better-at-writing-and-universities-should-worry-about-plagiarism-160481?utm_medium=email&amp;utm_campaign=Latest%20from%20The%20Conversation%20for%20November%205%202021&amp;utm_content=Latest%20from%20The%20Conversation%20for%20November%205%202021+CID_b03d7710e079726351264870b063e13a&amp;utm_source=campaign_monitor_ca&amp;utm_term=Artificial%20intelligence%20is%20getting%20better%20at%20writing%20and%20universities%20should%20worry%20about%20plagiarism\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">The Conversation<\/a><\/em> about the use of artificial intelligence in academic writing and the dilemmas that may pose when it comes to academic integrity.<\/p>\n<p>They write:<\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cThe dramatic rise of online learning during the COVID-19 pandemic has spotlit concerns about the role of technology in\u00a0exam surveillance\u00a0\u2014 and also\u00a0in student cheating.\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u00a0<\/em><em>Some universities have reported\u00a0more cheating\u00a0during the pandemic, and such concerns are unfolding in a climate where\u00a0technologies that allow for the automation of writing\u00a0continue to improve.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u00a0<\/em><em>Over the past two years,\u00a0the ability of artificial intelligence\u00a0to generate writing has leapt\u00a0forward significantly, particularly with the development of what\u2019s known as the language generator GPT-3. With this, companies such as Google,\u00a0Microsoft and NVIDIA\u00a0can now produce\u00a0\u201chuman-like\u201d text.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u00a0<\/em><em>AI-generated writing has raised the stakes of how universities and schools will gauge\u00a0what constitutes academic misconduct, such as plagiarism.
