{"id":75006,"date":"2021-11-03T09:12:53","date_gmt":"2021-11-03T13:12:53","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/?p=75006"},"modified":"2021-11-03T16:32:11","modified_gmt":"2021-11-03T20:32:11","slug":"events-to-educate-brock-community-on-indigenous-treaties-culture","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/2021\/11\/events-to-educate-brock-community-on-indigenous-treaties-culture\/","title":{"rendered":"Events to educate Brock community on Indigenous treaties, culture"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Brock community is invited to participate in a virtual discussion being held as part of Treaties Recognition Week.<\/p>\n<p>Taking place Thursday, Nov. 4 at 1 p.m., the online event will explore the overall importance of treaties and aims to increase awareness of the treaty relationships between Indigenous nations as well as with non-Indigenous peoples.<\/p>\n<p>Treaties are constitutionally recognized agreements that lay out the rights, responsibilities and relationships of First Nations peoples and the provincial and federal governments.<\/p>\n<p>The Zoom event will see participants engage in an open discussion with Brock Aboriginal Support Assistant\/Student Advisor Mac Orlando and Faculty of Education Assistant Professor Stanley \u2018Bobby\u2019 Henry, where any and all questions are welcome.<\/p>\n<p>During the discussion, Orlando hopes those in attendance will learn more about the significance treaties hold as the original agreements of friendship between Indigenous and non-Indigenous peoples and about the land they share.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPeople often forget how important treaties are,\u201d said Orlando. \u201cWe want to answer questions and have a conversation on the significance of treaties and hope that people walk away from the talk feeling a bit more informed.
