{"id":74866,"date":"2021-10-26T12:31:56","date_gmt":"2021-10-26T16:31:56","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/?p=74866"},"modified":"2021-10-29T16:04:49","modified_gmt":"2021-10-29T20:04:49","slug":"brock-offering-full-slate-of-activities-to-encourage-responsible-gatherings-this-halloween","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/2021\/10\/brock-offering-full-slate-of-activities-to-encourage-responsible-gatherings-this-halloween\/","title":{"rendered":"Brock offering full slate of activities to encourage responsible gatherings this Halloween"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Brock University students will have plenty of options when looking for something safe to do this Halloween weekend.<\/p>\n<p>As it continues to work with Niagara communities and encourage its students to be good neighbours, the University has expanded its on-campus offerings throughout this week and weekend, while also ramping up off-campus patrols.<\/p>\n<p>Brock continues to work with local municipalities, Niagara Regional Police Service and Niagara Region Public Health to educate its students about making smart decisions, especially as COVID-19 restrictions remain in place.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe have seen many issues arise in the province so far this fall, with students making poor decisions that adversely affect their local communities,\u201d said Brock University Interim President Lynn Wells. \u201cAs a part of this Niagara community, it is important for us to educate our students and make them aware of alternatives to attending unlawful and unsafe gatherings.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>With public health measures still in place, large student gatherings on or off campus are not permitted. Local law enforcement and bylaw officers are taking a zero-tolerance approach, with significant fines being handed out as required.<\/p>\n<p>As it has done throughout the start of the Fall Term, Brock is paying for additional Niagara Regional Police officers to patrol known student areas off campus. Brock Campus Security will also have its full complement of staff working throughout the weekend.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe really want to encourage our students to explore the wide variety of engaging Brock-sanctioned events and activities that are being offered both in person and online,\u201d said Brad Clarke, Director, Student Life and Success. \u201cWe understand that Halloween is a time when students want to gather and enjoy themselves, but we\u2019re asking that it happen in a safe and responsible manner.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Visit <a href=\"https:\/\/experiencebu.brocku.ca\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">ExperienceBU<\/a> for the full lineup of Halloween events and for additional details, including registration information.<\/p>\n<p>Here are some highlights of the initiatives taking place:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The Don\u2019t Put the Bad in Badger campaign returns with Brock\u2019s Off-Campus Living and Neighbourhood Relations office delivering messaging to students on campus and in higher density student areas off campus throughout the week.<\/li>\n<li>The Brock University Students\u2019 Union (BUSU) is using its outdoor patio to set up Halloween-themed decorations and will have passive activities and giveaways for students.<\/li>\n<li>The Department of\u00a0Residence\u00a0has been offering consent\u00a0and healthy relationship\u00a0programming throughout October and will have alternative Halloween programming Friday, Saturday and Sunday.<\/li>\n<li>Brock\u2019s Student Wellness and Accessibility Centre (SWAC) has launched campus-wide educational campaigns\u00a0on substance abuse, consent,\u00a0staying safe during Halloween and COVID-19, and\u00a0safe partying and safe drinking.\u00a0SWAC is also working with various campus partners to host Treat or Treat events <a href=\"https:\/\/experiencebu.brocku.ca\/event\/192435\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Wednesday<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/experiencebu.brocku.ca\/event\/192436\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Thursday<\/a> that encourage students to visit various locations on campus\u00a0to learn a tip\u00a0about celebrating Halloween safely in return for a\u00a0giveaway.<\/li>\n<li>Brock Human Rights and Equity (HRE) is focusing on several social media campaigns that\u00a0will educate students on appropriate Halloween costumes, consent, partying and healthy relationships.\u00a0In partnership with SWAC, HRE is hosting a virtual <a href=\"https:\/\/experiencebu.brocku.ca\/event\/191593\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Spooky Tie Dye<\/a>\u00a0event on\u00a0Tuesday, Oct. 26\u00a0from 7 to 8:30 p.m.\u00a0In partnership with the Student Justice Centre\u00a0(SJC)\u00a0and\u00a0Student Life and Success (SLS), HRE is also\u00a0hosting the <a href=\"https:\/\/experiencebu.brocku.ca\/event\/191860\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Be Spooky not Racist<\/a>\u00a0event on Thursday, Oct. 28\u00a0from 6 to 7 p.m.<\/li>\n<li>The SJC is working on a\u00a0large-scale\u00a0campaign related to appropriate Halloween\u00a0costumes and hosted\u00a0a\u00a0virtual\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/experiencebu.brocku.ca\/event\/192056\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">2SLGBTQ+ Adult Virtual Drop In Group<\/a>\u00a0Monday night.<\/li>\n<li>The SLS department is offering students a series of alternative\u00a0Halloween\u00a0programs, both on and off campus, including trips to the Crux Escape room in St. Catharines Wednesday and Thursday; a Halloween-themed <a href=\"https:\/\/experiencebu.brocku.ca\/event\/192429\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">painting event<\/a> on campus\u00a0Thursday; a <a href=\"https:\/\/experiencebu.brocku.ca\/event\/191151\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Tip or Treat<\/a> event in the Student Success Centre Friday; a <a href=\"https:\/\/experiencebu.brocku.ca\/event\/191722\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Movie Fright event<\/a>\u00a0at Landmark Cinemas Saturday night;\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/experiencebu.brocku.ca\/event\/191898\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Ghouls just\u00a0wanna\u00a0have fun &#8211; Music Trivia<\/a>\u00a0Sunday night; and the annual\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/experiencebu.brocku.ca\/event\/191982\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Trick or Eat event<\/a> Sunday, where\u00a0students go door to door collecting food donations for Community Care of St. Catharines.<\/li>\n<li>Brock\u00a0International\u00a0is hosting a trip to\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/experiencebu.brocku.ca\/event\/191353\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Warner Ranch and Pumpkin Farm<\/a>\u00a0on Wednesday as well as a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/experiencebu.brocku.ca\/event\/191286\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Halloween Social<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/international\/2020\/10\/20\/a-spook-tacular-halloween-costume-contest\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Costume Contest<\/a> Friday.<\/li>\n<li>Brock Recreation\u00a0is hosting <a href=\"https:\/\/anc.ca.apm.activecommunities.com\/brocku\/daycare\/program\/88?onlineSiteId=0&amp;from_original_cui=true&amp;online=true\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Pumpkins in the Pool Friday<\/a>, where students can swim alongside pumpkins and take one home after. The Walker Sports Complex will have extended hours until 8 p.m. on Saturday and will be allowing students to sign up for two-hour time-slots at the Zone Fitness Centre. There will also be Fright Night on Alumni Field, where Brock\u2019s turf field will be open for soccer, flag football, spikeball and more under the lights.
