{"id":74532,"date":"2021-10-08T12:47:45","date_gmt":"2021-10-08T16:47:45","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/?p=74532"},"modified":"2024-09-01T09:54:48","modified_gmt":"2024-09-01T13:54:48","slug":"kerwin-lets-rebuild-sporting-structure-so-that-love-for-the-game-can-flourish","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/2021\/10\/kerwin-lets-rebuild-sporting-structure-so-that-love-for-the-game-can-flourish\/","title":{"rendered":"KERWIN: Let\u2019s rebuild sporting structure so that love for the game can flourish"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Shannon Kerwin, Associate Professor of Sport Management at Brock University, wrote a piece recently published by <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sportsbusinessjournal.com\/Journal\/Issues\/2021\/10\/04\/Opinion\/Kerwin.aspx?hl=kerwin&amp;sc=0\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Sports Business Journal<\/a><\/em> where she imagines what sports would be like if leagues were designed with girls\u2019 ideals in mind.<\/p>\n<p>She writes:<\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cWhere would you go and where would you play if you wanted a sporting career built around the love of the game?<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u00a0<\/em><em>Further, where could you go \u2013 if advancement in your sport wasn\u2019t solely propelled by league profit, pursuit of \u201cperfection\u201d or even personal acclaim?<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u00a0<\/em><em>The lack of alternatives is because almost all leagues, for men and women, were built on traditionally men-centric principles. Win-at-all-costs competition, high performance and militarism are rampant in field sport, and for many athletes and professionals they are the primary answers to \u201cwhy I do it\u201d and \u201chow I do it.\u201d International Day of the Girl on October 11 \u2013 highlighting that girls\u2019 rights are human rights \u2013 begs the questions of whether any leagues are designed for their ideals.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>From ages as early as five years, children and parents are fed messaging that their child needs to specialize and be in competitive leagues in order to succeed. And so, over the last five years, a significant global push has arisen to advance equity in sport participation and leadership. However, some leaders debate whether the over marketization of sport has resulted in reframing participants as consumers, and skill development as revenue generation.
