After more than a year in the field, Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist Ian Urbina concluded: \u201cThere are few remaining frontiers on our planet. Perhaps the wildest, and the least understood, are the world\u2019s oceans.\u201d\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Governed by no single country or authority, the high seas represent a\u00a0literal and figurative final frontier. And in this age of information \u2014\u00a0where we can access livestreams from Mars, for example\u00a0\u2014 we know shockingly little about the ocean.\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong><em>The race for oceanic resources<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><em>Despite being inaccessible to many, the world\u2019s oceans are under an extraordinary set of pressures.\u00a0Climate change and industrial overfishing\u00a0remain the most critical threats \u2014 they undermine the oceans\u2019 capacity to provide nutritious food and fulfilling livelihoods for hundreds of millions of people.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>At the same time, new players are turning towards the oceans as a source of economic growth.
