{"id":73764,"date":"2021-08-24T15:30:42","date_gmt":"2021-08-24T19:30:42","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/?p=73764"},"modified":"2021-08-24T15:39:22","modified_gmt":"2021-08-24T19:39:22","slug":"new-international-student-ambassadors-ready-to-represent-brock","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/2021\/08\/new-international-student-ambassadors-ready-to-represent-brock\/","title":{"rendered":"New International Student Ambassadors ready to represent Brock"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>As the Brock community readies for the start of the Fall Term, 10 students from around the globe are preparing to share their love of Brock University with the world.<\/p>\n<p>Each year, the University selects up to 10 recipients for the <a href=\"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/international\/current\/ambassadors\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">International Student Ambassador Award<\/a>, with each student exemplifying the mission and vision of Brock University due to their academic achievements and engagement both on and off campus.<\/p>\n<p>Brock\u2019s 2021-22 International Student Ambassadors include Laveena Agnani from the United Arab Emirates, Sharifa Sadika Ahmed from Bangladesh, Chimerem Amiaka from Nigeria, Mishrka Bucha from Mauritius, Hamed Karagahi from Iran, Sumin Oh from South Korea, Ximena Paredes from Mexico, Arshdeep Singh from India and Faryal Zehra from Pakistan.<\/p>\n<p>Aiden Luu from Vietnam, who previously served two years as an ambassador, will also join the group as a mentor. Luu will take on added leadership responsibilities throughout the year and guide new ambassadors through the ins and outs of their new role.<\/p>\n<p>The ambassadors work with Brock International throughout the year by interacting with prospective and current international students. Through their involvement in various events, ambassadors share details about why they chose Brock, living in Niagara and how studying at Brock is helping them prepare for their careers.<\/p>\n<p>Despite all the ambassadors making Niagara their new home away from home, participation in many of this year\u2019s activities will continue to be virtual due to ongoing public health restrictions related to the COVID-19 pandemic.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLast year, our ambassadors demonstrated the impact they can have on international recruitment and student services despite being virtual,\u201d said Camille Rutherford, Vice-Provost, Strategic Partnerships and International. \u201cI look forward to seeing them share their passion for Brock and connect with students from around the world.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Biographies of each International Student Ambassador are <a href=\"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/international\/current\/ambassadors\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">available here<\/a>, with details of each member of the group also shared on Brock International\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/brockuintl\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Instagram page<\/a>\u00a0and newly launched <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tiktok.com\/@brockuintl\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">TikTok account<\/a> over the next two weeks.<\/p>\n<p>Recipients of the International Student Ambassador Award have their international tuition fees reduced to the domestic rate.<\/p>\n<p>Students interested in sharing their passion for Brock with the world can apply in early 2022 to be an International Student Ambassador for the 2022-23 academic year. Information about the next round of applications will be <a href=\"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/safa\/awards-and-bursaries\/international-students\/ambassador-program-application\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">posted online<\/a> as it becomes available.<\/p>\n<p><strong>This year\u2019s ambassadors include:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Laveena\u00a0Agnani, United Arab Emirates<\/strong><br \/>\nThanks in part to a\u00a0strong partnership\u00a0between the two institutions,\u00a0Laveena Agnani\u00a0transferred from the Canadian\u00a0University Dubai to Brock University during her second year.\u00a0The fourth-year\u00a0Business Administration student\u00a0had nearly all her credits transferred and received immense support from Brock faculty and staff. From the support\u00a0systems available to the campus\u00a0beauty, Brock \u201coffers everything I want to experience in a university,\u201d Agnani says.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Sharifa\u00a0Sadika Ahmed, Bangladesh<\/strong><br \/>\nEntering her fourth year in Accounting, Sharifa\u00a0Sadika Ahmed\u00a0brings an abundance of experience to this year\u2019s ambassador group. She\u00a0has\u00a0been a Goodman Ambassador at the Goodman School of Business,\u00a0a\u00a0University Liaison at the Brock University Accounting Conference (BUAC) and President of the Brock Bangladeshi Students\u2019 Association. After completing her undergraduate degree,\u00a0Ahmed plans to pursue her CPA designation\u00a0and work as an auditor, eventually transitioning to consultancy and\/or advisory.\u00a0<strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Chimerem\u00a0Amiaka, Nigeria<\/strong><br \/>\nThis year\u2019s sole master\u2019s\u00a0student,\u00a0Chimerem Amiaka,\u00a0is\u00a0entering her second year of graduate studies in Kinesiology.\u00a0She\u00a0chose Brock University because of the institution\u2019s devotion to experiential education, which allows students to apply theoretical learning\u00a0from\u00a0the classroom to the real world. Preparing for the workforce\u00a0through Brock\u2019s experiential opportunities,\u00a0Amiaka\u00a0plans to pursue a career in physiotherapy after graduation.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Mishrka\u00a0Bucha,\u00a0Mauritius<\/strong><br \/>\nAs a first-year Tourism and Environment student, Mishrka Bucha\u00a0loves Brock\u2019s safe, fun and vibrant atmosphere, which will aid in her academic and social growth. One of the main reasons she chose Brock was its location. The University\u2019s main campus is in Niagara, a region highly regarded for its tourism, attractions and hotels. An aspiring hotel manager, Bucha believes she will benefit from Brock\u2019s proximity to a world-renowned tourism industry.\u00a0Ultimately, she hopes to give back to the Brock community by earning her PhD, becoming a professor and teaching at Brock University.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Hamed\u00a0Karagahi, Iran<\/strong><br \/>\nReturning as an ambassador for a second straight year,\u00a0Hamed Karagahi\u00a0has\u00a0jumped at the opportunity\u00a0to get\u00a0involved\u00a0during\u00a0his early years at Brock University.\u00a0The third-year\u00a0Public Health student is a\u00a0member of the\u00a0President\u2019s Advisory Committee on Human Rights, Equity and Decolonization,\u00a0a second-place\u00a0finalist for the IDeA National Competition, and a\u00a0Peer Assistant for Brock\u2019s Human Rights and Equity office\u00a0(HRE).<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy great work environment at Brock University is one of the things that I will always cherish,\u201d said Karagahi. \u201cI recommend any future Brock student to try to work within the University and on campus to fully experience everything that Brock has to offer.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Driven by his work experience with\u00a0HRE, he also recommends\u00a0international\u00a0students learn about Canadian laws and policies that protect\u00a0them and their rights.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Sumin Oh, South Korea<\/strong><br \/>\nAccounting Co-op student Sumin\u00a0Oh\u00a0has not hesitated\u00a0to become\u00a0an active member of the Brock community.\u00a0Although she\u2019s entering her first year,\u00a0she has already gotten involved with the Goodman Business Students\u2019 Association as Director of Student Engagement.\u00a0Oh is a firm believer in how extracurricular activities elevate the experience of international students. Involved in more than 15 extracurricular activities during her four high school years in Canada, she met many unique individuals, expanded her English language skills and learned about Canadian culture.<\/p>\n<p>Now at Brock University,\u00a0Oh\u00a0appreciates the welcoming environment focused on diversity and inclusion, and students\u2019 health and well-being.\u00a0She looks forward to expanding her professional knowledge in a nurturing academic environment and participating in numerous extracurricular activities, contributing to her long-term goal of achieving her CPA designation.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Ximena Paredes, Mexico<\/strong><br \/>\nSecond-year Psychology student Ximena Paredes learned through Brock\u2019s ExperienceBU workshops how diverse people from around the globe can share passions and come together to help create a better world. Through a\u00a0workshop called \u2018The Body Project,\u2019 Paredes met empowered women and learned more about\u00a0Brock\u2019s Student Wellness and Accessibility Centre\u00a0(SWAC), which\u00a0inspired her to volunteer with\u00a0SWAC\u2019s mental health division\u00a0for the rest of her first year.\u00a0This passion for helping others translates into Paredes\u2019\u00a0career goal of becoming a psychotherapist and\/or a scientist.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Arshdeep Singh, India<\/strong><br \/>\nA third-year Computer Science Co-op student, Arshdeep Singh chose Brock University for his post-secondary studies because of the University\u2019s\u00a0outstanding\u00a0co-op program.\u00a0He recommends all students embrace the co-op opportunity to gain practical work experience and discover new personal strengths and skills. With the work experience Singh obtains in Canada thanks to Brock\u2019s focus on experiential education, he plans to\u00a0drive the development of the IT sector in his home country, India.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Faryal Zehra, Pakistan<\/strong><br \/>\nReturning for her second year as a Brock Media and Communications student and International Student Ambassador, Faryal Zehra is one of many students who, despite being a returning student, has never been to campus for in-person classes. Her experience as an online student means she\u2019s well versed in the resources Brock provides its students and her advice for new Badgers is to leverage what\u2019s available as much as possible.<\/p>\n<p>She\u00a0recounts one of her most memorable experiences at Brock: hosting the Pakistani virtual Culture Fest in collaboration with Brock\u2019s Pakistani Students\u2019 Association.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI really enjoyed enlightening other Brock students about Pakistan and its culture,\u201d said Zehra.<\/p>\n<p>The Brock community can look forward to more Culture Fest events during the upcoming academic year, which will be posted on <a href=\"https:\/\/experiencebu.brocku.ca\/organization\/international\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Brock International\u2019s ExperienceBU page.<\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>This year\u2019s mentor is:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Aiden Luu, Vietnam<\/strong><br \/>\nIn his third consecutive year of ambassadorship, Aiden Luu returns in a mentorship role. His journey as a Brock International Student Ambassador started in 2018 with ESL Services.
