{"id":73590,"date":"2021-08-10T09:50:26","date_gmt":"2021-08-10T13:50:26","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/?p=73590"},"modified":"2021-08-11T09:23:45","modified_gmt":"2021-08-11T13:23:45","slug":"ideas-requests-sought-for-the-second-year-of-the-building-better-research-workshop-series","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/2021\/08\/ideas-requests-sought-for-the-second-year-of-the-building-better-research-workshop-series\/","title":{"rendered":"Ideas sought for Building Better Research workshop series"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Building Better Research (BBR) workshop series is gearing up for its second year \u2014 and organizers want to hear from Brock\u2019s research community.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re looking to hear about areas of research that could be supported with a workshop or discussion,\u201d says Sharlee Cranston-Reimer, Research Officer in the Office of Research Services. \u201cAre there topics that researchers want, or need to learn, more about?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Cranston-Reimer says she and co-organizer Nicole Nolan, Associate University Librarian, Research, have ideas for workshops based on feedback, questions researchers have been asking, and changes in the research landscape, \u201cbut we want to make sure that we\u2019re checking in with researchers directly about what would be of use to them, and we\u2019ll design the series accordingly.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Nolan says last year\u2019s series content was driven by what the researchers asked for.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe basis of the BBR Series is to respond to researchers\u2019 needs and questions and offer current and timely research support in a complex and evolving research environment,&#8221; she says.<\/p>\n<p>In fall 2020, Brock University Library and the Office of Research Services teamed up to announce <a href=\"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/2020\/10\/workshop-series-aims-to-build-better-research-at-brock\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">a 10-part series<\/a> of virtual workshops they created on a variety of research topics arising from a 2019 survey conducted with researchers.<\/p>\n<p>The wide-ranging series covered such areas as research data management, intellectual property, Equity, Diversity and Inclusion (EDI), scholarly publishing, grant budgeting, and knowledge mobilization.<\/p>\n<p>Cranston-Reimer says as the series progressed, more workshops were added as researchers came forth with ideas and requests.<\/p>\n<p>Other workshops that had previously stood alone were blended into the series, most notably three sessions on various aspects of applying for Insight Grants offered by the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada.<\/p>\n<p>The 2020-2021 BBR series ended up consisting of 18 workshops <a href=\"https:\/\/brocku.sharepoint.com\/Research-Services\/SitePages\/Building-Better-Research-video-series.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">posted in SharePoint<\/a>\u00a0and workshop attendance rose as the series progressed, says Cranston-Reimer.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe series brought together groups of people who have a lot of overlap but don\u2019t have a lot of opportunities to connect,\u201d she says. \u201cThrough the workshops, we saw people making connections and building relationships.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Nolan says the Brock University Library and Office of Research Services collaboration enabled workshops to co-ordinate and present, a \u201clarge pool of expertise\u201d from faculties and departments across campus.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThese workshops gave researchers opportunities to learn about a variety of research support services on campus, to engage in meaningful discussion, and to ask questions,\u201d says Nolan.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis ORS and Library collaboration also allowed for effective promotion and communication of workshops, which led to fantastic attendance and excellent conversations,\u201d she says.<\/p>\n<p>To suggest topics, or for more information, contact Nicole Nolan at <a href=\"mailto:nnolan@brocku.ca\">nnolan@brocku.ca<\/a> or Sharlee Cranston-Reimer at <a href=\"mailto:scranstonreimer@brocku.ca\">scranstonreimer@brocku.ca<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Building Better Research workshop series is gearing up for its second year \u2014 and organizers want to hear from Brock\u2019s research community.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":20,"featured_media":73591,"comment_status":"closed","ping_status":"closed","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":[],"categories":[1],"tags":[642,2701,3577,7488,98,607,384,348,522,5505,594,894,1381,3325],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/73590"}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/20"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=73590"}],"version-history":[{"count":2,"href":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/73590\/revisions"}],"predecessor-version":[{"id":73593,"href":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/73590\/revisions\/73593"}],"wp:featuredmedia":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media\/73591"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=73590"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=73590"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=73590"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
