The opportunities and risks of single-game sports betting in Canada"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Michael Naraine, Assistant Professor of Sport Management at Brock University; Cheri Bradish, Professor of Sport Business at Ryerson University; David Finch, Professor and Associate Director of the Institute for Community Prosperity at Mount Royal University; and David Legg, Professor in the Department of Health and Physical Education at Mount Royal University, recently co-wrote a piece in <em><a href=\"https:\/\/theconversation.com\/game-on-the-opportunities-and-risks-of-single-game-sports-betting-in-canada-163929?utm_medium=email&amp;utm_campaign=Latest%20from%20The%20Conversation%20for%20July%2023%202021&amp;utm_content=Latest%20from%20The%20Conversation%20for%20July%2023%202021+CID_e480ecdd5b9434956bf301d52794e38d&amp;utm_source=campaign_monitor_ca&amp;utm_term=Game%20on%20The%20opportunities%20and%20risks%20of%20single-game%20sports%20betting%20in%20Canada\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">The Conversation<\/a><\/em> about the legalization of single-game sports betting in Canada and what it means for Canadian sport.<\/p>\n<p>They write:<\/p>\n<p><em>&#8220;Single-event sports betting was recently\u00a0approved by the Senate of Canada via Bill C-218, which is\u00a0big news for the Canadian sport industry.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>The passage of this bill, almost 10 years in the making, will dramatically change the sports landscape in this country given\u00a0that annual betting by Canadians is already estimated to surpass US$10 billion\u00a0a year through offshore betting websites and illegal gambling operations.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>The influence of this bill \u2014 and related activities that will include sport marketing and media partnerships and related activation \u2014 will be enormous for an industry that has been severely and negatively impacted by COVID-19.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Many industry insiders representing professional sport teams and leagues are already planning for what they describe as being one of, if not the most,\u00a0transformational sport disruptions in the modern-day industry.
