{"id":72926,"date":"2021-06-25T10:14:50","date_gmt":"2021-06-25T14:14:50","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/?p=72926"},"modified":"2021-06-25T17:35:47","modified_gmt":"2021-06-25T21:35:47","slug":"ghazala-ahmed-becomes-third-brock-grad-in-fms-deans-household","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/2021\/06\/ghazala-ahmed-becomes-third-brock-grad-in-fms-deans-household\/","title":{"rendered":"Ghazala Ahmed becomes third Brock grad in FMS Dean\u2019s household"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Although it looked a little different than she had always dreamed, Ghazala Ahmed embraced her special Convocation ceremony for one on Friday, June 18.<\/p>\n<p>She earned her PhD in Educational Studies during Brock\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/2021\/06\/brocks-109th-convocation-goes-live-with-a-message-of-resiliency\/\">Virtual Spring Convocation<\/a>, and celebrated at home alongside her husband Ejaz Ahmed, Dean of the Faculty of Mathematics and Science.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI feel proud of earning my PhD, but also a little disappointed that I missed walking the stage,\u201d Ghazala said, adding she looks forward to taking part in a future in-person event on campus when public health restrictions allow.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_72930\" style=\"width: 372px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-72930\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\" wp-image-72930\" src=\"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/Ghazala-and-Ejaz-Ahmed.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"362\" height=\"457\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-72930\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Ghazala Ahmed and husband Ejaz Ahmed, Dean of Brock\u2019s Faculty of Mathematics and Science.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Ghazala\u2019s thesis examined how South Asian immigrant women conceptualize gender roles in the context of family and society in southwestern Ontario.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI did interviews with immigrant women in Canada and heard real life stories that were really powerful,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>Ghazala\u2019s convocation marks the third time a member of the Ahmed family graduated from Brock University, with son Jazib (BBA \u201915) graduating from the Goodman School of Business in 2015 and daughter Feryaal (BSc \u201916) earning her degree in Biophysics in 2016.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m feeling a little left out being the only one at home who hasn\u2019t graduated from Brock,\u201d Ejaz said jokingly. \u201cAfter my time as Dean, I may have to come back and take an undergraduate degree just to keep up with this illustrious bunch.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ghazala, Jazib and Feryaal had opportunities to attend different universities, but all found that Brock was the best option to advance their studies, while also feeling close to home.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen I first arrived at Brock around 2012, I didn\u2019t notice many people of colour or other cultures and I wondered how our family would integrate,\u201d Ghazala said. \u201cWe now have a robust international student body and variety of staff and faculty from all over the world.
