{"id":72883,"date":"2021-06-24T12:18:00","date_gmt":"2021-06-24T16:18:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/?p=72883"},"modified":"2021-06-25T09:34:59","modified_gmt":"2021-06-25T13:34:59","slug":"clubs-competitions-help-goodman-grads-net-business-tech-jobs","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/2021\/06\/clubs-competitions-help-goodman-grads-net-business-tech-jobs\/","title":{"rendered":"Clubs, competitions help Goodman grads net business tech jobs"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>For Goodman School of Business graduates Jayna Sutaria (BBA \u201921) and Anna Cherdakova (MBA \u201921), the equation to finding success in the business technology industry included not only their studies, but also their involvement in the School\u2019s clubs and competition teams.<\/p>\n<p>As a student leader, Sutaria was actively involved in clubs under the umbrella of the Business Students\u2019 Association, including founding the Data Analytics Students Association, serving as President of Brock\u2019s Women in Business club, and competing for the School on the JDCC and DECA case competition teams.<\/p>\n<p>Through clubs, she got direct exposure to employers and was able to add valuable experience to her resum\u00e9.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf it wasn\u2019t for Goodman, I wouldn\u2019t have the ability to build relationships,\u201d said Sutaria, who graduated Friday, June 18 with her Bachelor of Business Administration. \u201cGoodman is unique in the sense that the community really feels like your community due to the size of the school.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Sutaria\u2019s academic achievement was recognized at Brock\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/2021\/06\/brocks-109th-convocation-goes-live-with-a-message-of-resiliency\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Virtual Spring Convocation<\/a>, where she was honoured with Goodman\u2019s Outstanding Award of Excellence in Information Systems for obtaining the highest graduating average in her degree concentration.<\/p>\n<p>When Sutaria was considering which path to take for her undergraduate studies, choosing a program that had a co-op component was important for her. During her time at Brock, she completed three co-op terms with Enterprise Architecture at RBC, \u00a0building relationships in the organization where she now works as a Business Analyst for the Engagement and Product Management Strategy team.<\/p>\n<p>For some, excelling in all three of these areas \u2014 leadership, academics and in the workplace \u2014 would be overwhelming. Sutaria credits her ability to prioritize her time and mental health for allowing her to find balance and success.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPrioritizing my mental health and finding ways to nourish myself to make sure I was not feeling burnt out left me energy to give my time to the areas I really wanted to focus on,\u201d she said. \u201cI had a really good support system of friends, family and resources at Brock that helped me do this.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>As for what\u2019s next, Sutaria said what drives her career choice is the ability to explore new problems.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBeing exposed to new problems and finding out how to solve them at an enterprise level with technology is what gets me excited,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>For Cherdakova, involvement in business case competitions and conferences paired perfectly with her studies in business analytics.<\/p>\n<p>As captain of Goodman\u2019s MBA Games academic team and a representative of the School at the internationally renowned John Molson Case Competition, she was able to refine her problem-solving skills and get creative when it came to developing solutions.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s about seeing the big picture,\u201d she said. \u201cThe MBA (Master of Business Administration) program and business games taught me how to see that it\u2019s not necessarily about a specific skill, but about the ability to look at a business idea from a more strategic perspective.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Events like the Datathon Education Conference held at Brock, which includes a data visualization competition, were extremely helpful for Cherdakova in networking with employers in the field and applying knowledge learned in the classroom.<\/p>\n<p>Now, she is applying the holistic approach she developed in solving business problems to her job as a Marketing and Operations Analyst at Ample Insight, a business analytics company in Toronto.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy courses and experiences have really helped me understand what clients need,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>For Goodman School of Business graduates Jayna Sutaria (BBA \u201921) and Anna Cherdakova (MBA \u201921), the equation to finding success in the business technology industry included not only their studies, but also their involvement in the School\u2019s clubs and competition teams.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":21,"featured_media":72884,"comment_status":"closed","ping_status":"closed","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":[],"categories":[119,39,188,55,1],"tags":[3333,10476,159,9127,2502,120,156,2852,594,6204,10475,1759,10451],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/72883"}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/21"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=72883"}],"version-history":[{"count":1,"href":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/72883\/revisions"}],"predecessor-version":[{"id":72885,"href":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/72883\/revisions\/72885"}],"wp:featuredmedia":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media\/72884"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=72883"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=72883"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=72883"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
