{"id":72849,"date":"2021-06-23T14:09:35","date_gmt":"2021-06-23T18:09:35","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/?p=72849"},"modified":"2021-06-23T14:12:19","modified_gmt":"2021-06-23T18:12:19","slug":"time-capsule-messages-inspire-education-grads","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/2021\/06\/time-capsule-messages-inspire-education-grads\/","title":{"rendered":"Time capsule messages inspire Education grads"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>For six years, Peter Vietgen has kept a sealed box filled with cue cards under his desk.<\/p>\n<p>On each small piece of paper contained within was a handwritten note from students embarking on their journey to become the next generation of teachers.<\/p>\n<p>It was in 2015, after delivering the keynote welcome address at an orientation session that Vietgen, an Associate Professor in the Faculty of Education, invited students to write down their reasons for becoming teachers.<\/p>\n<p>The cards \u2014 214 to be exact \u2014 recently made their way back into the hands of their rightful owners \u2014 Brock\u2019s newest Concurrent Teacher Education graduates.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_72851\" style=\"width: 511px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-72851\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\" wp-image-72851\" src=\"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/Nahiba-Sabree-note-1050x695.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"501\" height=\"331\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-72851\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Nabiha Sabree wrote this card when she first started the Concurrent Teacher Education program in 2015 to share why she wanted to become a teacher.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>The Class of 2021 is the first to graduate from the six-year Concurrent Teacher Education program since initial teacher education programs were expanded from one year to two by the Government of Ontario in 2015.<\/p>\n<p>Vietgen promised students they would get their cards back when they graduated in 2021 \u2014 and he did not disappoint. COVID-19 restrictions meant hand-delivery was not possible, so a team of Faculty of Education staff mailed the cards to the students, who graduated during <a href=\"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/2021\/06\/brocks-109th-convocation-goes-live-with-a-message-of-resiliency\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Brock\u2019s Virtual Spring Convocation<\/a> on June 18.<\/p>\n<p>Nabiha Sabree feels as though her path hasn\u2019t wavered since she wrote her note so many years ago.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy do I want to become a teacher?\u201d she questioned on the card. \u201cBecause the transformational teacher within is just waiting to help change students\u2019 lives for the better \u2014 not just academically, but in as many other ways as I possibly can to help them grow and be a successful individual.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Sabree chose a career in teaching because she loves helping others and wants to inspire her students to reach their full potential.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI wrote that during the orientation because I knew this profession has so much purpose and I knew it was meant to be mine to pursue,\u201d she said. \u201cI would most definitely write that note again today.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Her journey was not without challenges. In her fourth year, Sabree missed a month of classes while recovering from a concussion as well missing several weeks due to another illness.<\/p>\n<p>Even when it seemed impossible for her to keep up with her classes, Sabree kept working toward her dream of becoming a teacher.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDuring my time at Brock I faced so many obstacles,\u201d she said, \u201cbut I always overcame each and every one of them.\u201d<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_72852\" style=\"width: 321px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-72852\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\" wp-image-72852\" src=\"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/Kirstin-Dreise.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"311\" height=\"387\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-72852\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Kirstin Dreise graduated from the six-year Concurrent Teacher Education program on Friday, June 18.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Kirstin Dreise has also long dreamed of becoming a teacher.<\/p>\n<p><strong>&#8220;<\/strong>As a young child, I looked up to my teachers and always wanted to be a teacher just like them,\u201d she said, recalling how she would play school with her sisters on snow days and write math worksheets for them to complete. \u201cThe desire to be a math teacher has stayed with me since then, but the reasoning has developed over time.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>During her time at Brock, Dreise enjoyed learning to code and <a href=\"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/2018\/05\/students-introduce-innovative-ways-to-make-math-fun\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">how to apply that knowledge in teaching<\/a>. She wants to help change the focus of math education more toward learning transferable math skills and helping students to understand how to use math in the world, including technology integration.<strong>\u00a0\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>She looks forward to continuing to share her passion for math as a teacher and helping to dispel some of the anxiety that is so prevalent around math.<\/p>\n<p>On her card, Dreise wrote a quote that she once heard that stuck with her: \u201cTeaching is the profession that creates all other professions.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI still think it\u2019s true,\u201d she said. \u201cI still hope I can inspire some students for future careers, but I also want to be a teacher to encourage students to become their best selves and support them on their way.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Julian Hassan Mroue shares a similar passion for inspiring others. He pursued a career in teaching because, outside of his family, all of the people he looked up to were teachers.<\/p>\n<p>On his card, he wrote: \u201cI want to be a teacher because finding and nurturing a spark in a child is the most rewarding thing one can do.
