Author Makenna Goodman\u2019s novel\u00a0<\/em><em>The Shame<\/em><em>\u00a0<\/em><em>speaks to the experiences of people who feel stuck in relation to others with care needs who depend on them.\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>In talking about wanting to escape the responsibility of caring for her children, the novel\u2019s narrator wrestles with whether she\u2019d ever be able to \u201cescape the pain of both being a bad mother and being without them.\u201d\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>The book registers the \u201cstuckness (one feels) from adhering to a rigidly cultivated life\u201d and the complete and utter heartbreak that can come with not being able to live up to the moral, feminine expectations you\u2019ve set for yourself. \u201cWhat if life could be otherwise?\u201d is a question that seems to underpin the book.
