{"id":72497,"date":"2021-06-07T09:44:14","date_gmt":"2021-06-07T13:44:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/?p=72497"},"modified":"2024-09-01T09:54:55","modified_gmt":"2024-09-01T13:54:55","slug":"harding-and-whittingham-winemom-humour-and-empowerment-or-binge-drinking-and-mental-health-challenges","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/2021\/06\/harding-and-whittingham-winemom-humour-and-empowerment-or-binge-drinking-and-mental-health-challenges\/","title":{"rendered":"HARDING and WHITTINGHAM: #WineMom: Humour and empowerment or binge drinking and mental health challenges?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Lisa Whittingham, a PhD candidate in Brock&#8217;s Department of Child and Youth Studies, and Kelly Harding, Adjunct Professor of Psychology at Laurentian University, had a piece recently published in <em><a href=\"https:\/\/theconversation.com\/winemom-humour-and-empowerment-or-binge-drinking-and-mental-health-challenges-161338?utm_medium=email&amp;utm_campaign=Latest%20from%20The%20Conversation%20Canada%20for%20June%207%202021&amp;utm_content=Latest%20from%20The%20Conversation%20Canada%20for%20June%207%202021+CID_0c3bdf9100b63652b772be1c8c6c3ae5&amp;utm_source=campaign_monitor_ca&amp;utm_term=WineMom%20Humour%20and%20empowerment%20or%20binge%20drinking%20and%20mental%20health%20challenges\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">The Conversation<\/a><\/em> about a study they conducted that explored the #winemom hashtag to better understand how alcohol consumption was juxtaposed with motherhood.<\/p>\n<p>They write:<\/p>\n<p><em>&#8220;If you Google the term \u201cwine mom,\u201d you\u2019ll find an array of comedic returns, including countless\u00a0memes\u00a0of celebrities like\u00a0Julia Louis-Dreyfus\u00a0maniacally waving a bottle of wine or\u00a0Amy Schumer\u00a0drinking from an oversized glass, or numbered lists pointing to \u201csigns you might be a wine mom.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>You\u2019ll also find popular media articles highlighting that\u00a0while this trope initially appears to be harmless fun, it also alludes to a\u00a0darker underside of modern motherhood.\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>As\u00a0fetal alcohol spectrum disorder (FASD) preventionresearchers, we are increasingly interested in the growing popularity of this phenomenon and its portrayal on social media.\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>A wine mom is a mother who drinks wine to take the edge off daily tasks associated with motherhood. While the use of substances to cope with challenges is not new (like \u201cmother\u2019s little helper\u201d), the term wine mom\u00a0became popular in the mid-2010s\u00a0when mothers began to\u00a0self-identify and joke online\u00a0about drinking wine to cope with the stresses of modern motherhood.
