{"id":72195,"date":"2021-05-18T10:13:26","date_gmt":"2021-05-18T14:13:26","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/?p=72195"},"modified":"2021-05-18T10:13:26","modified_gmt":"2021-05-18T14:13:26","slug":"2021-sustainability-poetry-contest-winners-announced","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/2021\/05\/2021-sustainability-poetry-contest-winners-announced\/","title":{"rendered":"2021 Sustainability Poetry Contest winners announced"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A celebration will be held Thursday, May 20 as this year\u2019s winning entries for the seventh annual Sustainability Poetry Contest have been decided.<\/p>\n<p>Hosted annually by Brock University\u2019s United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) Chair, the contest invites Niagara poets to submit original written works, in English or French, that celebrate sustainability.<\/p>\n<p>There were two themes for the 2021 contest: The International Year of Peace and Trust; and the International Year of Fruits and Vegetables. The themes aligned with the international years being observed this year by the United Nations, drawing on current world events to highlight the goals and objectives of the organization.<\/p>\n<p>The winners of the contest are typically announced during an annual World Poetry Day Celebration in St. Catharines, but with the COVID-19 pandemic continuing and restrictions still in place around gatherings, it was decided the celebration would move online.<\/p>\n<p>Brock UNESCO Chair Liette Vasseur said she is happy to be able to congratulate the winners this week \u2014 even if it must be though a computer screen.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s unfortunate that we can\u2019t gather in person, but I want to recognize the hard work and effort made by all of the entrants in this year\u2019s Sustainability Poetry Contest,\u201d said Vasseur. \u201cWe were impressed by the number and the quality of poems received this year.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>This year\u2019s winners include:<br \/>\nGeneral public \u2014 Shelley Anne Locke, ONE UMBRELLA<br \/>\nUniversity\/college \u2014 Ethan Michael Birch, Hospital Fruit<br \/>\nHigh school \u2014 Jonathan Vasilyev, Ontario&#8217;s cornucopia<br \/>\nElementary school \u2014 Coral Foster, Health and happy<\/p>\n<p>In French:<br \/>\nUniversity \u2014 Dominic Scibetta, Mon Apprentissage des Fruits et L\u00e9gumes<br \/>\nElementary \u2014 Ambar Foster, Po\u00e8me de paix et confiance<\/p>\n<p>Vasseur also thanked her Brock colleagues who served as this year\u2019s judging panel: Catherine Parayre, Associate Professor and Director of the Centre for Studies in Arts and Culture; Gregory Betts, Professor with the Department of English; Adam Dickinson, Associate Professor of English and award-winning poet; and Neta Gordon, Associate Dean, Undergraduate Student Affairs and Curriculum in the Faculty of Humanities.<\/p>\n<p>To take part in Thursday\u2019s celebration, please contact <a href=\"mailto:lvasseur@brocku.ca\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">lvasseur@brocku.ca<\/a> for a link.
