{"id":71623,"date":"2021-04-12T14:18:18","date_gmt":"2021-04-12T18:18:18","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/?p=71623"},"modified":"2021-08-04T10:19:54","modified_gmt":"2021-08-04T14:19:54","slug":"brock-grad-hopes-to-recruit-fellow-alumni-for-design-resource-company","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/2021\/04\/brock-grad-hopes-to-recruit-fellow-alumni-for-design-resource-company\/","title":{"rendered":"Brock grad hopes to recruit fellow alumni for design resource company"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Shawn Rubel\u2019s (BA \u201904) secret to success is all in the details.<\/p>\n<p>The entrepreneur has harnessed his fine art training from Brock University into a successful business,\u00a0<a title=\"https:\/\/www.vecteezy.com\/\" href=\"https:\/\/www.vecteezy.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Vecteezy<\/a>, featuring stock photography, vectors, videos and Photoshop brushes.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur mission is to make creative assets available to everyone,\u201d he says, which the company does through a \u2018freemium\u2019 business model. The websites attract millions of amateur and professional designers, illustrators and artists seeking design resources each month.<\/p>\n<p>Rubel has built the company up to 70 employees and with plans to expand underway, he hopes to see fellow Brock alumni added to his team in the near future.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s having that connection, knowing you have the same background as someone, to build good relationships,\u201d he says. \u201cThe pandemic has really changed the way we work, and we\u2019ve transitioned to a remote work force, which opens us up to hiring talent from all over the world.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Rubel credits his fine art training at Brock for helping him to see the details in projects, in turn making him a better designer and allowing his business to thrive.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBrock helped me get a broader sense of the world,\u201d he says. \u201cBrock helped me understand fine arts in general, helped me work on colour and hone my eye to see details.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBeing detail-oriented is a core value at Eezy now, and it\u2019s something that we require all our folks to have,\u201d Rubel says.<\/p>\n<p>After graduating from Brock, Rubel headed to Bowling Green, Ky., to work as a web designer at an up-and-coming web development company. After working as a designer for several years, working with programmers and learning about entrepreneurship, he decided to pursue his broader interests in running a technology start up.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI was really interested in marketing and how to scale up a company,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>He took a position as an affiliate marketing manager with Camping World, an RV and camping retailer, where he \u201clearned a lot about affiliate marketing and how marketing on the internet works.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI went from staring at a computer every day looking at shape and form and colour to staring at spreadsheets, and that was a terrifying experience,\u201d he says.<\/p>\n<p>Needing a creative outlet, he began designing his own website to collect and share Photoshop brushes.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI knew early on that I wanted to develop a two-sided marketplace.
