{"id":71573,"date":"2021-04-08T09:01:07","date_gmt":"2021-04-08T13:01:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/?p=71573"},"modified":"2021-09-14T10:22:20","modified_gmt":"2021-09-14T14:22:20","slug":"brock-sports-honours-outstanding-student-athletes-staff-with-annual-awards","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/2021\/04\/brock-sports-honours-outstanding-student-athletes-staff-with-annual-awards\/","title":{"rendered":"Brock Sports honours outstanding student-athletes, staff with annual awards"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The 2020-21 sports season may have been cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic, but the efforts of Brock\u2019s student-athletes and student staff continued to shine.<\/p>\n<p>Their contributions were recently recognized through a series of awards bestowed by Brock Sports.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhile I wish we could celebrate our award recipients in person, I\u2019d like to thank all of our Badgers who have played a crucial role during these difficult circumstances,\u201d said Emily Allan, Interim Director of Brock Sports. \u201cIt has been wonderful to witness the growth of these award winners, and I hope they know what a lasting impact they\u2019ve made.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Kristin Gallant of the Brock women\u2019s basketball team earned the David S. Howes Spirit of Brock Award. Named after Howes, a St. Catharines businessman and longtime Brock supporter known for his commitment to the University and the Niagara community, the award is presented to a student who embodies the spirit of Maj.-Gen. Sir Isaac Brock with leadership, courage, innovation, inspiration and community service.<\/p>\n<p>Gallant, a fourth-year Psychology student, volunteered at the Niagara Children\u2019s Centre, where she worked with children with exceptionalities and served as a BU4U peer mentor to first-year students, helping them navigate life at Brock through an individualized approach.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt was a rewarding experience to work with and get to know children at the centre on a deeper level,\u201d said Gallant, who is from Milton but has lived in St. Catharines since she started attending Brock. \u201cThe experience with BU4U helped transform my leadership within academics. I\u2019ve learned what it takes to inspire others and help them succeed just as I\u2019ve had role models inspire me throughout my basketball career.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Gallant was keen to get involved when Brock Sports launched the <a href=\"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/2021\/03\/women-in-sport-aims-to-inspire-next-generation\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Women in Sport group<\/a> last September and is an active participant while organizing monthly meetings.<\/p>\n<p>Captain of the women\u2019s basketball team, she has never missed a game and rarely misses a practice. She is also a counsellor for the Brock basketball summer camps.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s no small measure to manage work commitments, volunteer hours, playing varsity basketball and maintaining a high overall average,\u201d said Brock women\u2019s basketball head coach Mike Rao. \u201cKristin is a very organized young lady, and her dedication to the pursuit of lifelong learning naturally paved the way for her positive involvement with the community.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Women\u2019s hockey forward Emma Irwin and men\u2019s wrestler Bobby Narwal earned the David Atkinson Surgite Award and R.M. Davis Surgite Award, respectively.<\/p>\n<p>These are awarded each year to current female and male student-athletes who excel both academically and athletically.<\/p>\n<p>Irwin, a second-year Medical Sciences student from Markham, and Narwal, a third-year Kinesiology student from Etobicoke, were named 2019-20 U SPORTS Academic All-Canadians in December.<\/p>\n<p>Irwin led the Badgers in power-play scoring during her rookie season in 2019-20, with four goals and nine points in 24 games.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEmma is one of the most complete elite-level student-athletes I have seen come through our program,\u201d said Brock women\u2019s head coach Margot Page. \u201cShe engages in everything she does at such a high level and works hard to constantly better herself. It\u2019s fantastic to see her recognized for this with this award.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Narwal won a silver medal at the Ontario University Athletics (OUA) Wrestling Championships during the 2019-20 season and helped the Badgers win a national title at the U SPORTS Wrestling Championships.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Bobby has been a privilege to coach at Brock. He&#8217;s made huge progress with his wrestling,&#8221; said wrestling head coach Marty Calder. &#8220;He has a great set of foundational skills that have helped him evolve both as a student and as an athlete. Bobby is completely committed and knows how to prioritize and sacrifice. He embraces the hard work and challenge of being a student-athlete. He&#8217;s also a great teammate \u2014 someone who leads by example in our program.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Abbey Hood Tidman and David Loiacono won the Joseph P. Kenny Student Therapist Award of Excellence.<\/p>\n<p>The honour is presented to student therapists who lead by example and are consistently present for practices and games while going above and beyond the call of duty to provide extraordinary taping, treatment and rehabilitation for varsity athletes. The recipient represents Brock Sports Medicine\u2019s (BSM) values and helps fellow staff or athletes when needed.<\/p>\n<p>Hood Tidman, who is completing her Master of Professional Kinesiology, spent two years working with each the Badgers women\u2019s softball and basketball teams. During this time, she mentored incoming student therapists and became known for her attention to detail for injury prevention, care and rehabilitation, which kept Brock\u2019s varsity athletes in the game.<\/p>\n<p>Loiacono\u2019s passion for Athletic Therapy transcended his work with the men\u2019s baseball and basketball teams beginning in 2018. He was offered a rare double placement during fall and winter thanks to his positive attitude and desire to contribute. A Kinesiology student, he was recognized for his exceptional hands-on skills, which are valued by student-athletes and fellow student therapists, and for consistently displaying a solid ability to translate theory into practice.<\/p>\n<p>Isaac Seabrook was named the Brock Sports Performance (BSP) Intern of the Year. This award recognizes a student intern who leads by example, continually trains in the Brock Sports Performance Centre (BSPC) and is always present for team sessions, testing and staff meetings.<\/p>\n<p>Seabrook was voted Intern of the Year by the lead performance coaches.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIsaac is one of the most polished performance coaches we have produced to date,\u201d said Steve Lidstone, Associate Director, Sports Performance and Sports Medicine. \u201cHe\u2019s a leader in data management.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Seabrook joined Brock in 2019 as a graduate student in Applied Health Sciences after completing a Bachelor of Science in Kinesiology at Queen\u2019s University.<\/p>\n<p>He worked with the Brock wrestling team and expeditiously became a leader and mentor for the rest of the BSP student coaches.<\/p>\n<p>The BSP Impact Award was awarded to Lyanne Martin.<\/p>\n<p>This award is granted to a BSP student or BSPC staff member who has left the program better than they found it, utilizing their passion and skills to create something that improves BSP as a whole.<\/p>\n<p>Martin first joined BSP in 2017 as a student performance coach with the men\u2019s volleyball team and has since taken the lead in assisting the BSM staff in developing return to play programming for injured varsity athletes with Team Buildr software.<\/p>\n<p>Martin, who is in the final semester of the Master of Professional Kinesiology program, continually strives to improve her education by taking opportunities to develop her skills through courses and conferences.<\/p>\n<p>She also assists in designing and implementing reconditioning programs for common musculoskeletal injuries such as post-op ACL reconstruction, MCL\/LCL sprains and ankle sprains.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLyanne has set the standard for combining the experiential education opportunities in both BSP and BSM and using the various assessment and training skills learned to create return to play programming for varsity athletes,\u201d said Lidstone. \u201cShe is well on her way to becoming a great practitioner.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The 2020-21 sports season may have been cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic, but the efforts of Brock\u2019s student-athletes and student staff continued to shine.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":49,"featured_media":71574,"comment_status":"closed","ping_status":"closed","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":[],"categories":[36,7,188,55,1,4,38,58],"tags":[10164,9524,256,4437,7904,7637,10477,7589,15,281],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/71573"}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/49"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=71573"}],"version-history":[{"count":1,"href":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/71573\/revisions"}],"predecessor-version":[{"id":71575,"href":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/71573\/revisions\/71575"}],"wp:featuredmedia":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media\/71574"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=71573"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=71573"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=71573"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
