{"id":71467,"date":"2021-04-01T13:40:04","date_gmt":"2021-04-01T17:40:04","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/?p=71467"},"modified":"2021-04-13T08:43:08","modified_gmt":"2021-04-13T12:43:08","slug":"brock-experts-weigh-in-on-code-of-conduct-addressing-maltreatment-in-sport","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/2021\/04\/brock-experts-weigh-in-on-code-of-conduct-addressing-maltreatment-in-sport\/","title":{"rendered":"Brock experts weigh in on code of conduct addressing maltreatment in sport"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>As of Thursday, April 1, integrating the policies of the Universal Code of Conduct to Prevent and Address Maltreatment in Sport (UCCMS) is mandatory for all federally funded, national-level sport organizations.<\/p>\n<p>Developed by the Canadian sport community, the UCCMS addresses maltreatment broadly and comprehensively, covering all types of conduct that inflict physical or psychological harm by a person against another person within the sport community.<\/p>\n<p>While generally viewed as a positive, there was some pushback from national and provincial sport organizations looking for clauses to allow what they considered to be \u2018accepted training practices in a sport.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>Brock University has a number of experts available to speak with the media about the issue of the UCCMS and its adoption. They say the unsuccessful pushback from some organizations suggest there are going to be challenges with the consistent implementation and enforcement of the Code.<\/p>\n<p>Assistant Professor of Sport Management Michele Donnelly says \u201cThe fact that the UCCMS \u2018addresses maltreatment broadly and comprehensively\u2019 is so important.\u201d<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_62190\" style=\"width: 254px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/MKDonnelly-FAHS-Brock-Uni.jpg\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-62190\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\" wp-image-62190\" src=\"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/MKDonnelly-FAHS-Brock-Uni.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"244\" height=\"262\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-62190\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Assistant Professor of Sport Management Michele Donnelly<\/p><\/div>\n<p>\u201cThis means we are not only going to be operating with the legal thresholds for harassment and abuse, but are also able to recognize and address all of the behaviours and actions that are so problematic in sport,\u201d she says.<strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Donnelly says reporting currently happens within a sport organization and has varied consequences (often repercussions) for those reporting. Further, harassment and abuse of athletes by coaches, and the lack of administrative action in these instances, has been highlighted in recent cases in the media and the courts.
