Brock\u2019s Decolonial Reading Circle (DRC)<\/a> will host a film screening Wednesday, March 24 focused on violence against Indigenous males and colonial injustice in the Canadian legal system.<\/p>\n

All members of the Brock community are welcome to join as the circle virtually views n\u00eepawistam\u00e2sowin: We Will Stand Up<\/em> \u2014 a film about the murder of Indigenous teen Colten Boushie.<\/p>\n

After the screening, viewers will have the opportunity to take part in a discussion with the film\u2019s director, Tasha Hubbard, a Cree filmmaker, writer and professor whose award-winning documentaries explore Indigenous rights.<\/p>\n

Associate Professor of Women\u2019s and Gender Studies Robyn Bourgeois, Brock\u2019s Acting Vice-Provost, Indigenous Engagement, said the screening and subsequent discussion will raise further awareness about an important topic.<\/p>\n

\u201cAs an Indigenous person, but specifically a n\u00eahiyaw (Cree) person like Colten, this film has been painful to watch because of its brutal exposure of colonial violence,\u201d she said. \u201cIn fact, for this reason, I haven\u2019t been able to finish this film to date. It\u2019s too painful for my heart and spirit. At the same time, this film is essential viewing for all people in Canada because it exposes the brutality of living an Indigenous life in this colonial settler state. We need to have hard discussions about how violence against Indigenous people has been and continues to be essential to the historical and ongoing existence of Canada as a nation state.\u201d<\/p>\n
