{"id":71221,"date":"2021-03-18T10:52:19","date_gmt":"2021-03-18T14:52:19","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/?p=71221"},"modified":"2021-03-18T15:52:36","modified_gmt":"2021-03-18T19:52:36","slug":"panel-discussion-to-highlights-ways-of-keeping-research-relevant","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/2021\/03\/panel-discussion-to-highlights-ways-of-keeping-research-relevant\/","title":{"rendered":"Panel discussion to highlights ways of keeping research relevant"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Brock Community is invited to an online panel discussion focused on keeping research relevant.<\/p>\n<p>Hosted by the Brock Joint PhD in Educational Studies program, the third and final virtual event in the Leading in Times of Change series takes place Thursday, March 25 from 6 to 8 p.m. The theme for the discussion is \u201cKeeping Research Relevant: Collaboration, Engagement and Community.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe final theme was selected to invite the scholarly community to reflect on the benefits of collaborative research and the relevance of research to participants and communities,\u201d said William Ankomah, a doctoral candidate and Co-Chair of the Education Graduate Students\u2019 Society (EGSS).<\/p>\n<p>The evening will include a\u202fvirtual panel discussion by faculty and doctoral students in the program, followed by small breakout group discussions allowing faculty, staff, students and alumni to connect with peers and colleagues.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMany graduate students are feeling isolated as we all work from home,\u201d said Karen Julien, a doctoral candidate and Co-Chair of EGSS. \u201cThis series is presenting us with the opportunity to connect with faculty and with our fellow students as we learn about each other\u2019s research interests and discuss important topics.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The series, which <a href=\"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/2020\/11\/phd-in-educational-studies-to-mark-20-years-with-virtual-panel-discussions\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">began last fall<\/a>, has also provided valuable experience for student members of the organizing committee who have helped to make the events a success.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWorking with this committee allowed me to stay connected to faculty, alumni and current students, which is significant for the academic pathway,\u201d said Rakha Zabin, a doctoral student. Zabin began her doctoral journey during the COVID-19 pandemic and found it challenging to build connections as a new student.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt has been more remarkable because of the invaluable mentorship I have received that immensely helped me nurture my leadership qualities connected to my research in the field of policy and leadership,\u201d Zabin said.<\/p>\n<p>The overall theme of the series, Leading in Times of Change<em>,<\/em> was chosen to engage participants in discussions about relevant issues in changing times, including challenges and possibilities of social justice, the COVID-19 pandemic and climate change.<\/p>\n<p>To register for the panel discussions, <a href=\"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/education\/programs\/graduate-programs\/joint-phd\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">visit the Joint PhD web page<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Brock\u2019s Faculty of Education is <a href=\"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/2020\/11\/phd-in-educational-studies-to-mark-20-years-with-virtual-panel-discussions\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">celebrating the 20th anniversary<\/a> of its <a href=\"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/education\/programs\/graduate-programs\/joint-phd\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Joint PhD in Educational Studies program<\/a> this year.
