{"id":71028,"date":"2021-03-11T09:40:13","date_gmt":"2021-03-11T14:40:13","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/?p=71028"},"modified":"2024-09-01T09:54:58","modified_gmt":"2024-09-01T13:54:58","slug":"norris-tax-pandemic-profiteering-by-tech-companies-to-help-fund-public-education","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/2021\/03\/norris-tax-pandemic-profiteering-by-tech-companies-to-help-fund-public-education\/","title":{"rendered":"NORRIS: Tax \u2018pandemic profiteering\u2019 by tech companies to help fund public education"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Trevor Norris, Associate Professor of Educational Studies at Brock University, had a piece recently published in <em><a href=\"https:\/\/theconversation.com\/tax-pandemic-profiteering-by-tech-companies-to-help-fund-public-education-155705\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">The Conversation<\/a><\/em> about the possibility of taxing tech companies to benefit schools.<\/p>\n<p>He writes:<\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cAs the one year anniversary of the\u00a0World Health Organization declaring a pandemic arrives, it is increasingly apparent that not everyone is having a hard time: Google, Apple, Facebook and Amazon\u00a0earned US$38 billion in profits\u00a0in the second quarter of 2020 alone.\u00a0The Guardian\u00a0reports that Amazon\u2019s share price is up\u00a062 per cent over the past year, and Apple\u2019s 70 per cent.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>While the coronavirus has infected more than three-quarters of a million Canadians and taken more than\u00a022,000 lives, the Canadian economy has also been devastated.\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Statistics Canada reports \u201cGDP growth rate declined by 2.1 per cent in the first quarter of 2020 and 11.5 per cent in the second quarter of 2020,\u201d\u00a0for an overall annual\u00a0decline of 5.1\u00a0per cent.
