{"id":70601,"date":"2021-02-18T10:55:19","date_gmt":"2021-02-18T15:55:19","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/?p=70601"},"modified":"2021-02-18T10:55:19","modified_gmt":"2021-02-18T15:55:19","slug":"bestselling-author-to-provide-tips-for-talking-science-with-media","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/2021\/02\/bestselling-author-to-provide-tips-for-talking-science-with-media\/","title":{"rendered":"Bestselling author to provide tips for talking science with media"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"BodyA\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">The world of science communication will be the focus of an upcoming online Brock discussion. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"BodyA\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">On Thursday, March 4 from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., the Brock community is invited to virtually join sport science journalist Alex Hutchinson for a talk titled \u201cWhat I Wish Scientists Knew About Science Communication.\u201d Hutchinson is the bestselling author of the book <i>Endure: Mind, Body and the Curiously Elastic Limits of Human Performance.<\/i><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"BodyA\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">The talk will be hosted by Stephen Cheung, Brock Kinesiology Professor and Senior Research Fellow. Cheung and Hutchinson will examine how to improve the way in which scientists communicate with the media. <\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"BodyA\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">\u201cIt\u2019s an essential responsibility for us scientists to bring our work to the real world, and to show the public why it\u2019s relevant and why it\u2019s fascinating,\u201d said Cheung. \u201cAlex has been a huge advocate for our field of exercise science and this talk will help give insights into how to communicate science from one of the best in the field.\u201d<b><\/b><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"BodyA\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">The talk will go beyond the usual basics of sport science conversation by discussing concrete techniques that scientists can use to improve their science communication skills to better assist journalists in their work.<\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"BodyA\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">This is the latest event in a virtual environment ergonomics series that Cheung has been co-organizing since April 2020. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"BodyA\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">To catch up on the past discussions, visit Cheung\u2019s <span class=\"Hyperlink0\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/channel\/UCkRUqJGzThACc4Xe-r38hgA\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"color: black;\">Environmental Ergonomics YouTube channel<\/span><\/a><\/span><span class=\"None\">.
