{"id":70590,"date":"2021-02-17T15:35:38","date_gmt":"2021-02-17T20:35:38","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/?p=70590"},"modified":"2021-02-17T15:35:55","modified_gmt":"2021-02-17T20:35:55","slug":"busu-contributes-100000-to-undergrad-student-emergency-fund","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/2021\/02\/busu-contributes-100000-to-undergrad-student-emergency-fund\/","title":{"rendered":"BUSU contributes $100,000 to Undergrad Student Emergency fund"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Brock University Students\u2019 Union (BUSU) President Asad Jalib has heard plenty of stories over the past year of students struggling financially as they try to deal with the COVID-19 pandemic.<\/p>\n<p>During an academic year unlike any other, the students&#8217; union has pivoted to ensure it is meeting the needs of its students.<\/p>\n<p>Now, BUSU is helping current students by contributing $100,000 to the Brock University Undergraduate Student Emergency Bursary, <a href=\"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/2020\/04\/brock-launches-covid-19-student-emergency-bursaries\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">which launched in April 2020<\/a> and allows students in financial need to <a href=\"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/safa\/awards-and-bursaries\/oneapp\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">apply online<\/a> for a $500 one-time bursary. The funds are available on a first-come, first-serve basis.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe want to do things that will be beneficial to our students this year, while still thinking about future students,\u201d said Jalib. \u201cWe knew this year we had to have a strategy. Foundationally, we thought \u2018if you\u2019re putting your fees in for this year, it should be a value for you this year.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere are a lot of people who say this will go a long way,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>Highlighted by the Big Ticket Concert, Welcome Week each September is typically a significant financial investment made by BUSU to give incoming students a proper introduction to university life.<\/p>\n<p>While there was still an online Welcome Week concert and other events, the savings over a traditional week of activities has allowed BUSU to support students in other ways.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe reduced expenses where we thought those activities were of lesser value for students and decided to put more resources into the hands of students where we knew it would help them,\u201d Jalib said. \u201cIt\u2019s all about figuring out where the funds should go to impact students in the most positive way.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Both BUSU and the Graduate Students\u2019 Association <a href=\"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/2020\/07\/university-student-unions-come-together-to-reduce-fees\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">took steps last summer to lower student fees for this year, collectively savings students more than $4 million<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Last month, <a href=\"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/2021\/01\/busu-reaffirms-mental-health-commitment-with-major-donation\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">BUSU contributed $160,000 towards Brock\u2019s Student Mental Health Fund<\/a>, helping the University meet a $250,000 mental health fundraising goal.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe saved where we could so we could invest where we needed to, like mental health,\u201d said Jalib. \u201cI\u2019m incredibly proud of our team.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Brock University Students\u2019 Union (BUSU) President Asad Jalib has heard plenty of stories over the past year of students struggling financially as they try to deal with the COVID-19 pandemic.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":18,"featured_media":56308,"comment_status":"closed","ping_status":"closed","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":[],"categories":[3319,1,4],"tags":[9202,2203,9987,133,8791],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/70590"}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/18"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=70590"}],"version-history":[{"count":3,"href":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/70590\/revisions"}],"predecessor-version":[{"id":70596,"href":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/70590\/revisions\/70596"}],"wp:featuredmedia":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media\/56308"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=70590"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=70590"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=70590"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
