A new online speaker series will explore social issues in Canada and the United States, starting with anti-Black racism in criminal justice.<\/p>\n
Brock\u2019s Centre for Canadian Studies has partnered with Bridgewater State University and Niagara University to create the series, \u201cVoices Across the Border,\u201d which will bring together experts from the two American universities as well as Brock to explore current social issues.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe were talking with our partners at Niagara University and Bridgewater about the opportunity provided by the shift to virtual meetings,\u201d says Dan Malleck, Director of the Centre for Canadian Studies. \u201cWe figured it provided a chance to have panel discussions about important topics and we know that we would all benefit sharing perspectives from either side of the border.\u201d<\/p>\n
The first talk, held Wednesday, Feb. 10 from 12:30 to 1:45 p.m. on Zoom, will address \u201cCrime Policing and Anti-Black Racism in Canada and the United States.\u201d The panel includes Assistant Professor of History Michael Durfee from Niagara University, Associate Professor of Management Jakari Griffith from Bridgewater State University, and Assistant Professor Simon Black from Brock\u2019s Department of Labour Studies. Panelists will discuss anti-Black racism in Canada and the U.S. and assess efforts to institute real and lasting changes in criminal justice.<\/p>\n
Future talks will explore decolonization and women in politics.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe hope this can be the beginning of a more regular set of meetings, likely continuing online for the foreseeable future,\u201d says Malleck.<\/p>\n
