{"id":70345,"date":"2021-02-03T14:17:42","date_gmt":"2021-02-03T19:17:42","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/?p=70345"},"modified":"2021-06-25T08:37:29","modified_gmt":"2021-06-25T12:37:29","slug":"surgite-award-recipients-celebrate-success-virtually","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/2021\/02\/surgite-award-recipients-celebrate-success-virtually\/","title":{"rendered":"Surgite Award recipients celebrate success virtually"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Not even a pandemic could stop the celebration of student excellence at Brock University.<\/p>\n<p>Traditionally, Brock\u2019s annual President\u2019s Surgite Awards have been presented each spring to student leaders who have made significant contributions to the University or wider community. However, due to the COVID-19 pandemic and public health guidelines that restricted in-person events, the 2020 winners were recognized virtually instead.<\/p>\n<p>Despite the online format, Brock\u2019s senior administration wanted to ensure the personal interactions with the winners \u2014 considered a highlight of the occasion \u2014 still took place.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_70351\" style=\"width: 231px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-70351\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\" wp-image-70351\" src=\"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/Aaron-Wexler-978x1050.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"221\" height=\"237\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-70351\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Fourth-year Kinesiology student Aaron Wexler was one of 10 recipients of Brock\u2019s 2019-2020 President\u2019s Surgite Award.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>A pair of virtual meetings took place in November and January, allowing University Provost and Vice-President, Academic, Lynn Wells and President Gervan Fearon to engage with and honour the award recipients.<\/p>\n<p>Wells said the meetings offered a chance to hear from some of the University\u2019s most involved student leaders.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cRecipients of the Surgite Awards are some of Brock\u2019s most involved, vibrant students, who are high-achieving academically but also role models for community engagement,\u201d she said. \u201cTheir perspectives on the Brock experience are truly thoughtful and insightful, and I\u2019ve been privileged to learn from them, especially in the challenging situation that we\u2019re going through this year.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Fourth-year Kinesiology student Aaron Wexler said the time spent with Wells and Fearon was filled with engaging conversation.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI appreciated the opportunity to communicate with the President and Provost who were very personable and genuinely interested in our academic and personal pursuits,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>Wexler said the discussion brought up many of the same emotions he felt when he initially learned he was chosen for the honour.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen I first received the email indicating I was a recipient of the award, I was ecstatic,\u201d he said. \u201cI felt like the countless hours I have invested into my program, Faculty and community were acknowledged from a Brock-wide standpoint. It was truly one of the best experiences of my undergraduate degree.\u201d<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_70352\" style=\"width: 163px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-70352\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\" wp-image-70352\" src=\"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/Amy-Cruickshank-761x1050.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"153\" height=\"211\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-70352\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Master of Professional Kinesiology student Amy Cruickshank was one of 10 recipients of Brock\u2019s 2019-2020 President\u2019s Surgite Award.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Master of Kinesiology student Amy Cruickshank also appreciated the comprehensive nature of the award and the importance it placed on all facets of life at Brock.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI was honoured to be acknowledged for the experiences I have been involved in at Brock University, but also outside of the academic environment as a volunteer in community settings,\u201d she said. \u201cIt was these experiences volunteering that enhanced not only my professional, but also personal development and character.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Most of all, the students appreciated the personal connection that came with celebrating their successes virtually with Wells and Fearon.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMeeting with the President and Provost made me feel heard,\u201d said Biological Sciences PhD student Mariana Garrido de Castro. \u201cAll the recipients contributed to the Brock community in different ways and the meeting showed us the appreciation of the President and the Provost for our efforts.
